cambridge audio dvd57 = poo?
Question:

just got me one of these - as it's progressive scan (pal / ntsc ) and was told that it's the nutts, but it is *****. Very poor picture in that it stutters as things pan round you see items stop then jump to a new location - seriously annoying - now, off to richers for a full refund.
don't buy one people, my old tosh 2109 ******** all over it.

Answers:

I tried one of these too - PAL progressive was like looking through some fine net curtains, and NTSC Progressive was OK until a bright scene came along - explosions in Spider-Man caused the picture to distort badly, as did some scenes in The Matrix. I couldn't even calibrate using the needle pulse tests in Avia...
Interlaced output was quite soft...
It went back, and the Tosh 520 was miles better too... Pity about the PAL green shift though..

Mikey - if you've still got it, could you do me a massive favour and report back on the information supplied on the manufacturer's label on the reverse of the player - it's possible these decks may be made by Sampo.
Just (1) where they are made (eg China), (2) first five digits of the serial number and (3) dat of manufacture if supplied.
Cheers - you could be helping a whole community :)

mate - it went back this morning, sorry - I didn't read this post in time. The chap at richers says it shares the same 'chip set' as the limit and - ho ho - wait for it - the arcam player too..... cobblers.
do you think they are merely a badged pile of poo then?

Answers:

Oh they're definitely rebadged somethings or others, as the casing is being used by a lot of Far Eastern manufacturers at the moment (it's become very incestuous over there, with a lot of manufacturers sharing casings, components, menu interfaces, the lot).
I was just curious as to whether it was Sampo or not, as they have a player with such a casing on sale in Taiwan at present.
As for it having Arcam components in it...

Sorry to hear that you had such aproblem with the DVD57.
The one I got hold of does not show any problems at all it runs really well the picture is crisp and sharp and the sound footage is great. Did a sound check on various DVDs and found that I was able to hear small details that I was unable to hear on my old Tosh220e, when i replayed the matix it was like wachin a new film as there was such a difference on how the whole sound field and all its details came accrossed.
I must be luckin in gettin a good one ore it might even be an updated version since its original release.

Cambridge Audio DVD57 Update Ref: version3
The Machine :- This is a review/info on the DVD57 model which is the same as the DVD55 but has DVD-audio plus the dac is 24bit/192kHz compared to the 55 model that is 24bit/96kHz also all the connectors on the back are gold plated.
The drive system comes from AsaTech who produce drive systems for the likes of Toshiba,Philips and Sony.
The case is a Sampo design(Compacks DVD5000 ) with different components inside.
Inside they use
Crystal CS3460 chipstet
OP2001Ge pink triangle and a EvaTec chip on a version 3.2 board.
Overall The machine is good the audio side is outstanding with pinpoint accurate sound field. The video is crisp and clear.I have tried many types of VCD/SVCDs commercial and home burnt ones with and without chapters and all work.
Tried DVD rips onto CDrs onto DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs and again I have not found any problems.CDRW/ CDR audio/ MP3s/ Jpeg/ Kodak Photo discs and MPEG-Iso CD Mode worked a treat with very fast response times
The only problem I have come accros is on some of the Kodak Photo discs it got finiky but I think it might be down to the condition of the discs not the player.
The downside :- is make sure you get the latest version 3 machine with the small slim remote as the earlier models do not play VCD/SVCDs and have a few other teething problems which have been reported around.
The new design remote that is like the 53 model does not work correctly as they are dispaching a patch on a disc for it to work right, so make sure you get the nice slim one as it works a lot better and all the buttons glow in the dark cool).
Verdict :-I am very pleased with my purchase and I am glad that I persevered with it after getting an ealy model that had some problems but RicherSounds was more than willing and helpful to sort things out for me. Since getting the latest version (v3) model I have had no problems with it and can now say that I can recommend this machine as a good buy.
Final word :- Make sure its a version3 Machine with the slimline remote and you will not have any problems Enjoy...
