Question:
Was this a good idea? Ive been reading about them a lot over the last couple of days and it seems that theyre amazing for the price, especially as I payed £599, but they can have reliability problems?
I'm a bit confused by the how widescreen stuff works. Surely if i fed my digibox into the svideo it would not autoswitch to widescreen? will i be able to get anamorphic res on it?
Also for those who bought from robert whyte how long did they take to deliver it?
thanks for your help
I just bought one of these on Friday (from Robert Whyte), happened to be in Glasgow on business so I picked it up.
So far I have absolutly no issues at all, have set everything up and works like a dream and picture is massive. Also very impressed with the quality of the picture (wife even loves it!!).
The only thing that bothered me is that as they are sometimes ex demo units they can have quite a few hours on them (some upto 5-700!!). I was lucky and got one with only 12 hours use!!
On the whole I would say that it the best £600 I have ever spend (that and the £300 new dvd player and £250 screen!!!!) and for that monet it really is a no brainer!!
GL.
cheers mate :)
do you know if there is a chance of getting one with dead pixels or are they all checked beforehand?
also whats the largest size picture anyone has got on this (that is worth watching)?

I thought mine had only 7 hours use but in fact they can reset the hours and infact if you go into the service menu (which I've forgotten how to do) it tells you the true figure on the various brightness settings. You may well have 12 hours use but its probably more likely to be a few hundred. I think mine was about 200 on low and 30 on bright. The good thing about the robert whytes one's I think is they are refurbished/repair models and the most likely reason they have been repaired is the psu and the service pack is meant to have higher spec capacitors than even the later improved AE100 psu section.
oh well, I dont mind a couple of hundred hours on the bulb :) is the bulb replaced with the warranty if it fails in the first year?
I can't wait :D:D:D
how long did they take to deliver you projector Bonzo Banana?
cheers
I've had it a few months now but from memory I think it was next day. It certainly should have been because delivery was £30!
Still its dead pixel free which makes me a happy bunny.
with regards bulb replacement if robert whyte has reset the lamp bulb use counter and it burns out well before 2000 hours I reckon you could make a claim under guarantee.
yeah the £30 delivery is a bit steep isnt it :(
like I said, for £600 I thought it was a bargain and at the end of the day demo or graded it still has to be fit for purpose.
Still amazes me having a 6ft picture!!!!
family man, do you noctice the individual pixels at that picture size? whats the largest picture youve had with it?
thanks

The PJ is about 10.5ft away from the screen and the smallest picture I can have is about 6ft wide. I havent really tried any bigger as I only have a 6ft screen but should be able to do a couple more feet!! 6ft is plenty for me!!
I havent noticed the individual pixels to much but if you look really hard on some scenes you can a bit. Really doesnt notice to be honest. If this is your forst PJ (as it was mine) you will just ne blown away at how big and good the picture. Everyone I have shown so far has said 'I didnt expect the picture to be that good!
yeah i thought that a plasma would be better quality picture but everything Ive read says that a well set up projector is much better.
I'm well excited. Pity I've got my finals in 2 weeks :(

To be honest I don't care if a plasma or rear projection crt television has a better quality display. I would live in fear of having it left on the same channel with an onscreen logo and get burned into the display. With an LCD display you don't have to give a toss. You can watch anything you want all day including video games. Just to rub in the point the little panny projector has a digital still frame option and you can leave it like that for as long as you want too.
Top projector for that sort of cash. I paid lots more for mine when they were first released. :(
My picture is a couple of inches under 8ft wide and i sit around 14 ft from the screen and the chickenwire effect isn't noticeable especially if you defocus it very slightly (which i don't do).
My only real issue with the Panny is it has to be fed a progressive scan picture to look really outstanding, either via a PS dvd player or HCPC. I went down the HCPC route but gave up with it as it wasn't user (read wife) friendly enough. So i now have a PS player and it looks just as good as HCPC for a lot less money. :)
Thinking of getting one of these myself maybe.
What kind of size/quality picture can I expect if I put it in a smallish room of about 3 metres ?, Would it look ok on a light blue wall rather than a screen ?, how long can you expect a projector to last ?, how well does it cope with non-anamorphic material ?, and would a bog standard no thrills dvd player be ok for the time being or will I have to upgrade the player ?.
I borrowed a Projector from work for this weekend (an Epsom 500 something or other) not the greatest projector in the world (the fan is noisy a hell) but I wanted to test one and see what all the fuss was about. It's unbelievable, we have a pretty small living room so I set it up as far from the wall as possible (the walls are painted a horrible yellow colour - the landlord loves it so we can't do out about it) and I get about a 6 foot picture on it and it looks amazing (the lens if filthy but its not mine so I aint gonna try and clean it). Myself and the wife stayed in all day yesterday and watched moves (back to the future, Swordfish, Police Story and Boogie Nights) and maybe it was the sight of Mark Walbergs 13" penis or the Disco soundtrack still reverberating round the room but at the end of Boogie nights wife turned to me and said those magic word "We have to get a projector of our own" i'm telling ye my heart skipped a beat!!
So for £600 I may invest in one of these Panny's.
double post.
as a newbie to the whole PJ scene and having had one for 3 days now I really would recommend it to anyone!!
can anyone answer my questions please ?.

The Panasonic has a range of inputs with the PC VGA connector giving the best image with the right resolution. I think the ideal resolution is something like 860x480 which is a ntsc widescreen resolution. The image set up like this is phenomenal I think as is an image at 640x480. Obviously resolutions above 860x480 have to be scaled to fit which lowers resolution. From memory the AE100 actually has a resolution of 858x484. Progressive scan via component is the next best option and then there's svga (fairly poor) and composite (pretty bad). In a small room you should be able to display at least an image of 5 feet across possibly 7 feet which is still an amazing size. Projectors themselves should last a long time. An LCD projector may get a dead pixel or two over the years but most don't. Most dead pixels on projectors arrive with the projector from new as a manufacturing defect but you are expected to live with them if you get them if there are only a few and they aren't in the centre of the screen.
A bog standard dvd player will give you a picture via s-video or composite. It won't be a great picture though. Its really down to how fussy you are. I connected my gamecube to my projector via composite and wasn't impressed. The dreamcast on the other hand I connected via a vga box and was truly stunned by the quaity of the display. It was amazing. I was playing Half Life Blue Shift and felt immersed in the game. If you want some amazing game experiences via your projector you can do no better than picking up a cheap dc and vga box. The dc has some of the best games available on any console. There are a few dvd players about with VGA output for progressive scan for less than £100. These are ideal for a Panny projector.

you can expect in image size of between 6ft-7 ft wide and about
7ft-8.5 ft diagonal image. Problem is the closer you sit to an image the more noticable the pixel stucture is. I have an 8ft wide image and sit about 12ft back and dont realy notice the pixels.
would not look good on a blue wall as colours would be washed out, best is white or some people prefer icestorm grey clolour painted diy screens.
lamp life is about 5000 hrs on low lamp mode for this pj so it depends how often you use it. I use mine all the time even for normal tv viewing and have notched up 1400hrs from august last year.
best to upgrade your player to one that has component out and progressive scan it realy does make a difference. I have a toshiba 510 which does the job very well, look to pay about £50-£100 for decent component cables.
just noticed my post has svga in place of s-video in the text.

What happens after those 5000 odd hrs are up ?, is the panny fit for the bin ?.
What is a dead pixel, screen door, btw ?.

after 5000 you replace the bulb costs about £250 and reset the clock and start over again.
the image of a lcd projector is made up from thousands of tiny pixels and its known for some of tehme to fail duiring manufacture and a dead pixel is where no light is emitted by that pixel so it appears black these are hardley noticeable from the viewing position. You can also get a stuck open pixels which shows up as either red, green or blue depending on which lcd panel has the failed pixel, these can be noticeable , i have a stuck open blue pixel in the middle of mine which is noticeable in dark scenes i use a small piece of yellow tape on the screen to minimise it and works ok. If the unit has a stuck green pixel it can be replaced under warranty but you must have more than 4 red or 4 blue before they will replace it.
screen door is a term for seeing the pixel grid or the spaces between the pixels similar to looking through a mesh screen door if you get what i mean. The further back you sit the less you will notice it.
You would be advised to check on lamp warranty prior to the purchase as it may not be covered.
I had my heart set one one of these but after reading about the problems with them over at the avforums(some people ahve had them repaired 3 times!) Im having doubts. Anyone got any suggestions for a different project around 600-800?

Ive just heard that some are having to keep getting repaired over and over again, but I think I am going to try one. I just measured my room and a RPTV is no longer an option so I rang RW and they havent got any at the minute but are expecting a delivery later today(they will ring me when they have them at hand). Il go down on Saturday and pick one up.
next problem-a screen, need a roll down one as it will be rolling down over a window, anyone, ideas?
try here (http://www.convergent-av.co.uk/) he can sort you out with a screen you have to email him for prices look to pay between £200- £300 for a decent size screen.
Having purchased two different screens last week I would heartily recommend these guys:
http://www.direkt2u.co.uk
I went for the 67" 16:9 screen and at 10.5ft it is just big enough!!
Superb quality screen, good prices and excellent service!!
Shame I cant say the same for the other outfit I ordered a pile of poo screen from!!
Still thinking about whether to get one myself.
Having never seen a projector running before it's a pretty big risk to buy blind.

To be honest I bought pretty much blind and I cannot stress enough that this really is the best bit of kit I have bought!!
Watched Fight Club last night on the 6ft screen, it was superb!! I am now going through my whole collection working out what might look good on the big screen!! Really does bring a lot of movies alive!

Not literally like as that would be a bit scary!!!
wait till you try watching porn on it:nuts:
I'll second the comments above - excellent piece of kit, especially at the end of line price. I had a dead pixel, but it was swapped next day for a new box.
Thinking of the getting HK progressive scan DVD next ..... can I wait till Xmas....:)

I have a lot of average quality non-anamorphic discs though.
How bad/good will they look on a projector ?.
Plus being able to read subtitles clearly is a must for me.
Very few dvds in my collection are what you could call reference quality discs which is why I'm a little skeptical as to whether a projector is the best option for me - especially as I've heard anything less than a stunning transfer gets ripped apart through a large screen projector.
I assume it's pretty simple to set up.
Plug dvd player to projector and aim at wall ?, or is there more to it than that ?.
How much is a good multi-region progressive scan player btw?.
I have tried a number of different disks and to be honest they have all looked pretty damn good.
As for subtitles I'm not sure but all the credits and FBI warnings etc are perfectly readable.
All I can say is that I am not a perfectionist when it comes to picture quality so that probably doesn’t help. Having said that I do know the difference between a good/average/poor quality picture and so far everything I have watched has been very good!!
It is very simple to set up literally plug and play (have spent a bit of time getting the settings right but I think that is down to personal preference).
I had to but the whole lot, PJ, screen and new DVD player. The player I went for is the Harman Kardon DV25 in Justin's power buy. I paid £295 because I didnt want to wait (still £50 cheaper than anywhere else!!) but if you go for the actual power buy you can get it for about £260.
Took me months to decide what to do as I never buy anything lightly (plus its a lot of money!!) in the end I am glad I did it!!
Gonna have a long hard think and try and decide by the weekend.
Can anyone tell me roughly the vertical size of a 6ft screen ?.
Can the image be any smaller than 6ft ?, judging by the limitation of the room it would have to go in, the sitting area will only be about 7ft away from the screen. Would this be too close and make the pixels too noticable?.

On the diagonal I watch a 2.35:1 ratio film at over 12ft!! Don't have any probs to be honest. (I sit about 15ft away)
Jimmyboy - I'd recommend trying to get a demo tbh - each to their own and all that. If you're sitting 7ft away you may notice the screen door too much - imho it wouldn't really bother me though.
andrewj: you say yours had a dead pixel and it was swapped out the net day. was that a robert whyte one? what colour was the pixel?
jimmyboy ill let you know what i think of it when it arrives on friday ( i phoned them up yesterday), ive got about 15 people coming round for a viewing of the matrix and a night of virtua tennis and bomberman :D . and on saturday were gonna use the side of my mates house
i cant wait

No - it was electricaldiscountuk IIRC - it had a stuck blue pixel, but they swapped it no questions asked - and made sure they checked the new one before they sent it......
Jimmyboy- subtitles are easy to read on my panny AE300 if that helps
Yeah it does thanks,
I guess my only major concern then is what it will look like when sitting only 6-7ft away and how well it will haddle those shoddy non-anamorphic HK discs.
got it today... all i can say is WOW
remember to close the blinds when watching pron at night, i forgot and had the other side of the street seeing what i was seeing lol
getting mine tomorrow hopefully  got the cash out, made my projector screen(£20, came out pretty good), picking up my prog scan dvd player on the way, ordered my rgb to vga(pc) cable for the digi box. Its soo exciting, it better work out ok as I only have enough room for a tv or PJ, so have sold my telly(although there is a tv upstairs for teletext still!)
Good to see your happy with your purchase mince bigalow.

JB - With the AE100 6-7 ft away would probably be pushing it i think with those HK dvds.
It would be ok with the AE300 but having not seen a AE100 i'm not sure. The ae100 has a lower resolution and you've got the problem with screendoor. I'd say, either save up for a AE300 or go and check out a AE100 in action if you can.

Hi mate, how much was the rgb to vga convertor and where did you get it from. Freeview box to projector using composite is OK, but would be much happier with something like this.

Hmmm, shoddy HK disks are a bit of a problem. I use an AE100 and to watch them without cutting the subs off i have to watch in 4:3 mode :( Picture quality even still is more than acceptable sat around 12 feet away from an 8ft wide screen.
I'll try to set it up tonight for a 6ft wide picture and sit 6-7 ft to test the quality.

I got it from www.keene.co.uk for £35 (or £30 for a 2m one), thats the same dilema i was going to have with my freeview box so I took the plunge and got the cable, its still cheaper than getting a new box with s video out or even a rgbtosvideo box, plus Ive hear the results are fantastic(although that was with a homemade cable).
the product code for the 2 cables are sbb92(2m) and sbb94(5 m)

In regards to having to watch HK dvds in 4:3 to see the subs is it not just possible to raise the screen an inch ?.

Cheers for that, let me know how you get on? Wanted something like this a while back, but got very confused by RGsB and all the Vsynch/Hysnch stuff that gets mentioned. If yours works fine, i'll order one as soon as.
il let you know when it arrives, I wasnt too sure myself, but I jsut figured that the s was the sync(maybe!).
Got the projector today, put the projector where it was going to go, and got a 9' image, and i only made a 6 ' wide screen!. I have to sit it on the table on its box at the minute. Anyone know of any permenant solution? I need something that is quite tall(70ish cm) but only has the surface area of the projector for it to sit on. I did try make on with wood but it fell apart :(
But anyhoo, Robert whyte is a bit of a dingy shop, I was expecting it to be a bit different, but the PJ works so far, and the image is fantastic in prog scan for dvds(using the £150 limit player from richer sounds), I just need some black cloth as its a bit too light in the room to see dark films properly(the matrix was a bit hard to see but spirited away look good).
digibox and ps2 through compostie switching on my amp has a lot of shimmering at the minute but as soon as I get my new vga lead and an s video cable for the ps2, it will solve that!
but overall, pretty impressed, I just wish I could figure out a permenant solution for the stand......

LOL I collected mine form there last week and it did make me chuckle a bit!! Bit of a dump really!!!
Still PJ works fine and staff were pleasant enough.
right, ive got a question regarding this PJ. Ive got my dvd on progressive scan and at first there wasnt any shimmering but now there is, I only notice it on very bright scenes and when the dvd player splash screen is up, its just as bad as the composite shimmering. Its almost as if there is some kinda interference with it. Has anyone any idea what is causing it or is that how its meant to be?
also, the unit gets really really hot near the fan area, is that meant to be that hot?
Lots of PT-AE owners HERE (http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=43)
Buying some decent leads cured my shimmering issues - take a look at CPC.co.uk - great leads for excellent prices - 'tech link' or 'pro link' or summat like that it was..............

I thought it would be that, I picked up a thor componenet cable and that works brilliantly, now just waiting for my othrer cable to come so I can get rid of the crappy composite signal!
I have a decent composite cable for Sky - but the pic is still crap comapred to other inputs. If I was really bothered about watching Sky on the PJ I would go for a Pro-V box or similar .... as it is I only really use it for DVDs.....
I have some 10m S-Video leads that I'm selling, in case these would help?
See thread in General Ads forum ...

Umm been thinking about a PJ for a while now and at this price i may have to take the plunge.
Just a couple of quick questions:
1) What connections does this projector take.
2) Have a Pioneer 656A DVD player - will this be good enough as it doesnt have progresive scan.
Spike
1)takes composite, s video, VGA(pc type thingy) and component.
2) the 656 has component out, so you will get a good pic, but just interlaced and not progressive scan, the pic will still be good.
Actually it looks like I may have miscalculated - I'd say I've got a sitting distance of around 9f away from the screen. The placement of the projector would be about the same.
Anyone think I could get away with a AE100 at this distance ?.
You need to use the throw calculator - its on Pannys website or projectorcentral. Be careful - I put a shelf on the wall opposite the screen, then discovered I couldn't get the image small enough for the screen - and a bigger screen would have blocked the door of the room ..... so if the room is quite large take care. I use the coffee table now - not ideal, but its really not much hassle to get out/put away - I leave the leads ready under the sofa.
I've worked out that I can probably get a projector going ok providing I can get an image of 5' or less - (not ideal I know).
What with me sitting only 9f or so away reducing the screen size is probably the only way getting an acceptable image.
The question is though, will it be possible to get an image of ideally 4.8' in width ?. Everyone here seems to have 6' as a minimum, can the AE100 go smaller ?.

got it today, unfortuantely it doesnt work :( 'tis something to do with the rgb signal only being 15hz when the vga in only accepts 30hz, so nothing came up.
at least keene says I can return the lead to them.
Now im confused as to what to do. Composite is driving me insane(big banding across the screen). my freeview box only does rgb or composite, so no s video.
I think i may ge tthe netgem freeview box wich has s video out via scart then get a scart to svideo cable and plug it into the projector, hopefully getting a better pic. the new fv box costs nearly as much as a decent rgb to svideo convertor anyway...
I'm seriously considering getting a Panny AE300, my set up would be:
PJ 10ft from the screen, on a shelf about 5ft high.
Seating position 9ft from the screen (the pj would be no more than 2ft from where i'm sitting.
15ft SCART cable from digibox to pj
15ft component cables from dvd to pj.
Does anyone think i would have any problems with this?
Would i be sitting too close? would the pj noise be distracting? etc....
Cheers.

Why bother spending all that money on new cables for your setup?
Im just going to buy a new DVD player to sit next to my projector on the back wall.

 Excellent news, thanks. Looks like i'll have to grit my teeth, and shell out £1350:eek: :D
Try shelling out £1700 for it like I did when it originally came out:oh-hum: :help:
For £1350 its a no brainer.

This is for CRT projectors only, NOT LCD.
Hmm, still thinking about what to get. Panny AE100, nice and cheap, but screendoor? Sanyo Z1....Cheapish....well not really, but heard good things. AE300? Very nice apparently?

Well I haven't seen the other two - but I can tell you the AE300 is indeed excellent.
how does a Panny AE100 stack up against a sony wht10

I'm a bit confused by the how widescreen stuff works. Surely if i fed my digibox into the svideo it would not autoswitch to widescreen? will i be able to get anamorphic res on it?

Answers:

I have a toshiba 510 which does the job very well, look to pay about £50-£100 for decent component cables.

after 5000 you replace the bulb costs about £250 and reset the clock and start over again.
the image of a lcd projector is made up from thousands of tiny pixels and its known for some of tehme to fail duiring manufacture and a dead pixel is where no light is emitted by that pixel so it appears black these are hardley noticeable from the viewing position.

Answers:
Answers:
Gonna have a long hard think and try and decide by the weekend.
Can anyone tell me roughly the vertical size of a 6ft screen ?.
Can the image be any smaller than 6ft ?, judging by the limitation of the room it would have to go in, the sitting area will only be about 7ft away from the screen. Would this be too close and make the pixels too noticable?.

Jimmyboy - I'd recommend trying to get a demo tbh - each to their own and all that. If you're sitting 7ft away you may notice the screen door too much - imho it wouldn't really bother me though.

It would be ok with the AE300 but having not seen a AE100 i'm not sure. The ae100 has a lower resolution and you've got the problem with screendoor. I'd say, either save up for a AE300 or go and check out a AE100 in action if you can.

Umm been thinking about a PJ for a while now and at this price i may have to take the plunge.
Just a couple of quick questions:
1) What connections does this projector take.
2) Have a Pioneer 656A DVD player - will this be good enough as it doesnt have progresive scan.
Spike
Answers:
1)takes composite, s video, VGA(pc type thingy) and component.
2) the 656 has component out, so you will get a good pic, but just interlaced and not progressive scan, the pic will still be good.

Actually it looks like I may have miscalculated - I'd say I've got a sitting distance of around 9f away from the screen. The placement of the projector would be about the same.
Anyone think I could get away with a AE100 at this distance ?.
Answers:
You need to use the throw calculator - its on Pannys website or projectorcentral. Be careful - I put a shelf on the wall opposite the screen, then discovered I couldn't get the image small enough for the screen - and a bigger screen would have blocked the door of the room ..... so if the room is quite large take care. I use the coffee table now - not ideal, but its really not much hassle to get out/put away - I leave the leads ready under the sofa.
