[Poll] How do you have your sub set up ?
Question:

<1> All speakers small - bass to sub only
<2> All speakers small - bass to front and sub
<3> Selected speakers Large - bass to sub only
<4> Selected speakers Large - bass to front and sub
also do you ahve sub connected via
<1> Phono ( low level )
<2> Speaker ( high level )
<3> Both

Answers:

I guess the closest I would get is <3> and I'm connected <1>

Answers:

Surely for this to mean anything you need to know what speakers are in use?
Mine is connected via phono, and only to the .1 channel with front speakers set to large.
My fronts a B&W 603 s1's and the sub is....erm a little kef jobbie I think. It hums so it's only put on for action movies (and no, the hum doesn't appear to be a mains loop as it does it without the phono plugged in as well).

I've got a <2> set up with it connected by method <1> i think

<1> and <1> with the phono lead connected to a Y splitter into both on the Sub.

Answers:

Guess I should have put mine at beginning but
Currently all speakers small with bass to sub only via phono
However I have B&W 603s and may try them on large

My front Linn speakers kick out loads of bass anyway,so if I set the Paradigm Sub to front it overloads them.

Do you only use your sub for LD/dvd ?

Answers:

Well after a play have changed mine to
<4> Selected speakers Large - bass to front and sub
<3> Both
Now gives better bass quality and more impact

Ok - after all that then can anyone say what each of these configurations should ideally produce and when they should be used ?
Have been told that 9 out of 10 times ALL speakers should be set to small and bass to sub only
Whilst this produces a rather nice sound on my system I find that it does lack a little of the slam, oomph and depth

Answers:

anyone care to hazard a guess ?

Answers:

"speakers should be set to small and bass to sub only"
means that you don't have to play/fiddle/fart about/ with the subs crossover cause the amplifier handles all that.
if you send the bass to the sub and fronts then yes you get more oomph but I tend to get more unwanted boom as well.
I think the best sound should come when all speakers are set to what they are (ie small sats are small but in my setup my speakers are all large (cording to amp manual)) and the bass goes to both sub and fronts (if they are large). But then you need to set your sub up carefully, which for me is hard to get right.

I have owned a REL Q100E since pretty much day it was released and still after all that time I am searching for my holy grail of perfect bass - the depth that I seem to get at times that I have speakers set at small and bass to the sub as well as the slam that I get when I have speakers set too large and bass sent to both.
The other equipment I have is a ( now rather old but still great ) Denon A1D amp with B&W603s2 fronts, CC6s2 centre and 602 rears
Any suggestions

How did you decide on this ? Probably something to do with thae fact he's got VM1s.. :dork:

<1> and <3> with Sound set to DD/DTS/PLII/Whatever for Movies/TV and Direct (L+R only) for Music
Use Mode 2 on my Rel Q200 Xover set to less than 80Hz so it works very well whatever I'm listening to.
Speakers are B&W 805 Signatures (L+R), HTM2 Centre and CDM2SE Surrounds.

So with that in mind and even though my 603s sound bassy I should keep them as small ?

Answers:

Well here is the problem
WIth them set to large and bass to both I certainly get more slam - sometimes too much but at least there is slam - its great for things like explosions and gun shots - however when set to small the slam almost goes completly
its strange

Answers:

Is your sub "in phase"..?
If they're set to small, have you cranked the rollover knob all the way round to the right..?
Sub volume set correctly..?

Answers:

Sub roll of turned to max
volume just on 75db same as other speakers

What about the phasing..?

I believe it is yes

Answers:

Duncan, have you tried moving the sub to different parts of the room. It's position is one of the largest factors in terms of the sound it produces.
Give it a go, you never know!

I did have 601's and an LCR60 at the front before switching to (the more kiddie-friendly, wall-mounted) VM1's and I ran those as small. Doing this allows the front to concentrate on the upper frequencies and the sub handles the bass - this, to my ears, makes the fronts sound freer and clearer.
With the VM1's there wasn't much choice really - although they sound ok without a sub (not being as small as some satellites) they hit the spot when set to small and used with a decent sub (don't rate the B&W sub that goes with it).
Now I can't fault them - although it took a good few hours before I was happy with both the low and high level settings on the REL.

I agree with the thing about small - my fronts sound much nicer in small but i seem to loose too much bass :(

It has to be the way your sub is set up then Duncan - my REL provides more than enough.

Answers:

cant be location - i did that thing of placing it were i sit and walking round room

Mine's in a corner if that helps - it's certainly provides more bass. I did try it free-sited and it sounded a little lightweight.

1 and 1 for me.
I have a question, though, which I hope someone can answer. I only recently bought my upgraded setup - a Marantz SR4300 amp and Infinity Alpha 5 5.1 speaker package. Nice satellites, and a very meaty sub.
Problem is, the sub keeps turning on and off. Crossover - max 150Hz - is all the way up (the manual says crossover is irrelevant using the LFE input anyway). If I set the speakers to -10db all round, and turn the sub out +10db up, it still doesn't stay on all the time, although I think it may improve a bit.
Watching Buffy season 6 (yay - awful picture quality though; not much better than season 1, albeit anamorphic. The box says DD2.0, the amp says DPLII Movie can be extracted from it, and it's right) it's flicking on and off every couple of minutes. I wouldn't mind so much (it's instant-on) if it didn't click annoyingly when doing so.
I may be returning the amp anyway, because it starts humming noticeably after a couple of hours - but the sound out of the satellites is still fine at that point.
I used to have a pair of Eltax Millenium Power Towers, but I couldn't match anything up with them (hence buying a full set) - I have picky ears. The sub (50-250Hz crossover) in those was even worse.
I /also/ used to use the decoder/amp in my Tosh 42WH18B TV, but again, the Eltax sub wasn't happy through that either, leaving me using the internal sub.
Am I just expecting too much, or is there something I can do (apart from switch amps until I get one that will stay on)?
Thanks for any advice.
