Question:
Hello,
I have been looking around for a cheap dvd player that will be multiregion and has dts/5.1 decoder as my amp only has a pro logic one, and have come across the Acoustic Solutions DVD651. Which is the best one to go for and are they easily hackable?
Any info please,
TIA
Rob
:)
Id upgrade the amp before your dvd player mate, you can beat real surround sound mate  this pro logic malarky isnt too good mate. hows your holiday going?? if i was on holiday mate surfing the forums wouldnt be on my list of things to do
We had a night in yesterday, and I thought I would have a quick look. My dvd player is knackered and just need a quick, cheap replacement thats all.
Anyone know of any good deals?
Anyone please...
Anyone?
The Acoustic Solutions players at Richer Sounds can be had for around £60 and are multiregion. not sure about it has onboard tho...
Cheers mate will check out Richer Sounds as I have never been there. I have been looking at the Tosh 220/330 as these look like they will do my job, are they easily hackable? Do they still price match, and I assume this dvd player will give me DTS/5.1 as it does the decoding.
Cheers
Rob
I think all Toshiba DVD's need a chip soldering into them to make the multi region........I had one and that was the only option available. However I believe Richer Sounds sell them already modded!

You do realise you won't get 5.1 or DTS unless you have an amp that has the ability to decode the signal from the dvd player?
If your amp only does Pro Logic, you won't be hearing any 5.1 or DTS.

Thanks for that, I will check them out then m8, ta.
Xenole, Yeah my sony htk 170 has a 5.1 option, but has no onboard decoder, and a digital in co-ax connector so iassum it will be fine. to connect the two, do I just use a normal co-ax cable from the digital out on the dvd player to the digital in on the amp? Which part of the cable do I use, red, or white, or yellow?
Cheers.
Rob
umm yellow is video, white and red are audio, you dont have a dd amp, so dont worry about it, the player will down mix to stereo
Hi mate,
Thanks for the reply, the amp should play 5.1 at least as there is a 5.1 option on it, and has a digital co-ax in. It just needs the dvd player to do the decoding.
Does this make sense?

I'm confused how can you get 5.1 channels out of a prologic amp with a digital input. If your prologic amp has a 5.1 channel option then it has 5 or 6 phono inputs. Surely theres no way you can get 5.1 through a digital cable. I would presume thats just for input of a stereo source (16bit 48khz or whatever a normal cd is).
There are plenty of cheap chinese dvd players with 5.1 analogue outputs. The Cyberhome ADL528 at richer sounds for £60 I think does dts and dolby digital decoding. I'm sure there are later better players for similar money with the same features.
Got he Accoustic Sols 651 i the end. Seems good, doesn't look much on the outside, but the picture and sound quality are great. I have 6 phono leads going from the back of the dvd player, to the amp, on the 5.1 in on the back of it. Give greats sounds and the dialogue is heard much better now. Really easy to turn into multiregion too.
Cheers,
Rob
My DVD player and Surround kit are both Acoustic Solutions and I'm very pleased with them. Very good quality kit - and British too!
