Question:
after listening to a discussion today on radio 2 regarding these warranties does anyone have an independent warranty e.g. one arrange by oneself and not through the dealer and if so what was the price differential?and obviously what was the item!
general opinion on the programme seemed to think that dealer prices were exorbitant.
the panel on the radio seemed to think that the indepent route is the way to go . all comments welcome:confused:
Ok i work for a company that offers extended warrenties on items. And this is what i think...
It's down to personal preference some items are not worth getting extended warrenties on, i would say anything under £150 properly isnt worth it and would be easier to just buy a new one but you have to bare in mind that most extended warrenties will offer the accidental damage cover which i think is very handy on such things as camcorders as they are quite expensive to repair. So if you are looking at the independent route make sure you get the most out of it.
I agree that the warranties are over priced and could be reduced. All this bad publicity makes my job a nightmare ..
As you have to sell the item to the customer, some salesman will say anything to sell an item eg./ its bomb proof/shock proof/fire proof even water resistant then they will say do you want an extended warrenty with that incase it breaks:)
I saw that on Lee Evans made me laugh.
The problem is that there really are few competitors in the market place after DSG and Kingfisher (except local/independants) so the majority of people have no choice other than to go to Dixons, etc or drive long distances.
This results in the big two firms are not worried about losing customers as they know that sooner or later, you've got to visit them for the latest technology and 'best' prices.
Regarding warranties, I also heard the interview with the DSG woman - and she was spouting utter rubbish. She actually said that DSG do not pay commission to staff and totally denied that customers get a reduced price on the warranty if they refuse first time. This has happened to me EVERY time I visit these stores.
She seemed to imply that the warranties were good if you intended to smash your own equipment up, float it in the bath, etc. So, if you're going to dot hat, then they are good value.
I have a Norwich Union warranty costing £10. p/month and covers ALL my electrical items such as washer/dryer, fridge, cooker, dishwasher, widescreen TV, satbox, videos, DVD, etc. Only doesn't cover computers and vacuum cleaners. They will repair where they can are replace if item is under 8 years old. This works out as £12.0 per year which is half the price was quoated for the warranty on my TV alone last year!!.
Bought a PC (£499) for my Dad last month from PCW and sales guy offered me warranty for £250.00 (half cost of PC) when I laughed he said that 'today only' he'd do it for £100.00.
I've worked in sales for 10 years and you should NEVER devalue the value of your product/service as it insults the buyer and exposes your profit margins. If the product/service is worth £250.00 then you damn well sell it at that price and convince the buyer why they need it. Otherwise, get out of sales.
BTW, I try to avoid buying from DSG/Kingfisher, but sometimes, for convenience or stock purposes, I've had to buy from them so I appreciate this makes me slightly hypocritical but merely quantifies my opening statement.
Don't forget that your TV's, DVD players at home are most likely covered by your home & contents insurance

Having worked for DSG in the past I can say with GREAT authority that DSG do not pay comission to staff on the sales of warranties.
Never have and never will. On you second point you do not get a reduced price on the warranty either, this would be illegal. The money discounted comes off the product and not the warranty.
That said I can honestly say there are "and don't believe the salesman because he will deny there aren't" a million and one ways of covering goods at less cost than through Coverplan.
Cheers, Brock.

I bought a load of stuff from Currys and asked them to chuck the extended warrantys in for free..
Of course he refused, but when I said I'd walk, he then proceeded to discount the actual products themselves by almost the equivalant amount..
Only used their warranty once so far - duff rings on my cooker - but to give them their due, the service was pretty damn good actually..
