HDTV in the UK???
Question:

just been reading up on HDTV, are we getting HDTV over in the UK? or are we destined for 625 lines of resolution for a while yet...

Answers:

Not sure if UK plans yet, but I have it and have to say that 1080i broadcasts are superb, especially when coupled with 5.1 soundtracks :)

Won't happen until the fuddy duddies in power die, and those of us grown up on SNES's get into power imho.

i think there was a rumour of a HDTV channel being launched in the UK in jan/feb 2004, im not too sure whether it was true or not, but i think it would be too early for them to start advertising it anyway.

I believe the next generation of sky hardware will be hdtv compatible and a new higher res format of dvd will appear so we should get hdtv televisions in a year or so but conventional terrestial broadcasting either analogue or digital will be 625. I just hope when the BBC is some low grade low resolution service in comparison we won't have our money stolen in the name of a tv license

Yep we will get HDTV but not is centuary. The powers that be haven't even decided on the PAL spec yet, just with NTSC Europe wants to adopt a better standard.

I don't think this is a europe issue. Besides europe is split between pal and secam currently. I think basically the american standard will be forced upon us due to lack of a european alternative. We will simply get hdtv sets with fallback pal compatibililty. Lets face it when the new breed fo higher res dvds come out people in the uk will buy tvs and hardware to play them even if the government doesn't officially endorse hdtv. The government is too slow moving on this issue to have any influence now. I mean freeview ain't upto much its void of film channels and much in the way of general entertainment. Many are disappointed with the service. Sky will launch hdtv sooner than you think and certainly within 5 years a vast number of people will have hdtv compatible equipment. I already have a Panasonic AE100 myself with is hdtv compatible. Not that this would make best use of the resolution though.
