Amp help for newbie..
Question:

Hey :)
I liked the look, review and price of the Eltax Evolution 5.2 surround speaker set, so I've taken the plunge. These have got to be better than the Typhoon DTS/DD5.1 stuff I got from Aldi or Lidl a year ago.
I want to move those speakers over to my PC, and then stick the Eltax in the living room.
Now.. I need an amp of some description.
I need something which has coax DD5.1/DTS input, and would do alright for music as well if possible.
I'm looking for a bargain - would the classifieds be a good bet (someone upgrading perhaps??)
Also - SACD: whats the best way of getting this up and running.
Any help anyone?

Answers:

The classifieds both here and over on The AV Forums would be a good place to start for your Receiver/Amp. Richer Sounds also have special offers on that are worth keeping an eye on.
As for SACD ... it's up to you if you want a stand alone player, or a DVD player with SACD capablity. Do you just want SACD play back, or DVD - Audio too? What exactly are you looking for?

Answers:

SACD - probably a CD player which can deal with this I guess.
Amp is more priority at the moment..
I havent a clue about what is a good amp - how much would i need to spend, second hand for something which would drive those eltax speakers quite nicely?
Many thanks, I really dont know enough about all this yet :(

Answers:

Well, if you want to buy new, then Richer Sounds have the Yamaha RXV430RDS for £179.95. You can obviously pick up a better Receiver for less money if buying second hand, or even spend less on a comparable Receiver/Amp, but you'll have to wait for something to come up.

Empire Direct are doing the Song STRDB780 (part of Sonys QS Range) here (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetailsnew.asp?modelcode=SON-STRDB780S) for £189.62 you could get Richers to price beat it sou you would end up paying £179.62.
For the SACD compatible CD player, richer do a Sony SCDXE670 for £119 which is supposed to be ok.

Okay, this looks pretty good - what do these cost second hand then? Is this amp good enough for music use with those Eltax speakers (i'm aware that theyre quite bass heavy, but I can live with that, or adjust setup I guess)

You're doing it all arse about face..
Have you actually auditioned those speakers you're buying, or have you just been seduced by the price..? How much are they, btw..?
As for SACD, why not hold off for a few months and grab Pioneer's new budget DVD/SACD/DVD-A player when it's released - best of all worlds..

Hey be cool yaool, the guy is just getting into it and hes bought some new speakers. He doesnt care if they are 'awesome' but Eltax actually make ssome bloody good budget speakers so fair play to the man ;)
As for a suitable amp, I'd say that almost any AV will have no problme s driving those speakers, not sure if all amps are up to handling SACD 'resolution' input though.

Mr Munson, fair enough, Eltax may well make a 'decent budget speaker' - but it's good practice to listen to the damn things before parting with folding..
Agree with your 'SACD resolution' comment though - esp. with those speakers.

Fair Play, I agree with you dude, but not everyone cares ALL that muich about their gear :)

Maybe not, but doing a ton & half - or however much - blind is just dumb.
I shall call it - Bargain Deafness™

Blind is not dumb. These are pretty cheap speakers(£165 for 5.2 set), and are definitely a step ahead of my Typhoon £99 AMP+Speaker set from Lidl.
I just wanted some advice on a cheap as chips amp to drive these things, and maybe use this to have SACD support.
To be honest, I'm not looking for the best quality, just good value for the peanuts I am able/want to spend on this set up.
Cheers for the help, anyways.

Those speakers + an AV amp + SACD player + interconnects & cables is gonna be in the region of £500 - hardly peanuts.
Which is why buying blind *is* dumb..
Still, it's your money..

Admittedly, the luxury of being able to listen to this stuff together before I get it would be nice, but its not really that feasible.
Besides - if i'm not happy with this setup, I can always send it back whence it came. Seems someone in another thread has these speakers with this amp, and is very impressed indeed.
I only asked for a bit of help, I'm not an audiophile so just wanted some advice.
I know its better to audition and listen to speakers etc, but its not always that easy.
btw, just the speakers and amp at the moment - SACD player will come later.
Also got some interconnects/cable already. (from richer sounds)
