DVD player tolerant of all discs
Question:

Hi
Looking for a new DVD player. I will only be using it for playing genuine DVDs (i.e. no DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW, etc). A couple of players I've had previously (Samsung 709 & Logix 3000) were very particular about the discs they would play - prone to skipping and break up even if the disc was brand new, never mind scratched and stained. Very annoying to get near the end of a movie only for the player to skip a minute or refuse to play the remainder of the film at all.
So, looking for people's recommendations for a player under £150 (pref under £100) that I can be sure will play anything I throw at it (but only thinking in terms of original DVDs). I've heard the Toshiba 220 mentioned as being the best in this respect (and a good machine in every other respect as well).
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I watch a lot of DVDs which have differing manufacturing quality (ie cheap discs from China, HK and Korea as well as 'western' dvds) on my Pioneer DV350 and so far it's played them all. It even plays discs perfectly that my PC DVD ROM drive and Xbox refused to even spin up.
You can get an auto multiregion version for £99 inc delivery from Amazon, which is where i got mine.

The Tosh is cheap from RIcher sounds and they do a good 3 years gaureentee for £10 (i think )
I think the tosh is about £120 (muliti- regio)

The Tosh 220 is now down to £100 MR at RS.

My mate has the tosh and he's not happy with it, i would go for the pioneer.

Thanks for the responses, I was aware of Richer's doing the Tosh for £100 multi-region but didn't realise Amazon were doing the Pioneer for the same price.
Like you, At The Gates, I'm going to be playing a lot of 'cheap discs' from HK, etc, which are often the testing ones so will probably go for the Pioneer.
Cheers!

I am a committed Pioneer fan. Before DVD, their Laserdisc players were excellent (and think of the mechanical stresses involved in spinning a 12 inch platter at several hundred RPM).
On my 737, and 505 before it, in 300+ DVDs the ONLY disc with any visible problem AT ALL (ie pixellation, skipping etc) has been 'Goldmember' R1 which the 737 won't play satisfactorily at all - a mastering fault.
