Question:
Hi there
strongly deciding on buying this but I cant find a review anywhere online.
The only place i can see is be direct but the specification is not exhaustive.
Can any1 strongly recommend this especially at the be direct price.
Also why is not on the samsung website
thanks in advance
Its on the german site;
http://audio.samsung.de/detail.asp?artid=516
but it is the same as the Samsung HTDM140 on the uk website. No retailer seems to sell the 140 model and I wonder if its another error with the samsung uk site. Its a truly atrocious site with very poor information. The reviews in magazines like what video are all based on the htdm150 model anyway but there is no difference so samsung themselves say except possibly the colour of the main unit but they weren't even sure about that.
can anyone tell me what the connections are like?
also, picture and sound, does it have s-video?
Can it handle NTSC discs?
Cheers in advance

There is no s-video and it handles ntsc discs by playing them in converted pal mode. The conversion is very good but its not true ntsc. I watched my copy of 'the last starfighter' Region 1 and the panning at the beginning that was terrible on my cyberhome ADL528 I previously had is much better on the Samsung so I'm presuming the samsung is converting the actual dvd data directly to pal rather than the cyberhomes just miss every 6th frame out approach which wasn't as good. It may be possible in the future to get this home cinema system to play in native ntsc mode as theres no techical reason why it can't but they have not given the option in the menus. However there may be a way to access a more techncial menu on the samsung but this isn't currently known.
cheers bonzo
thanks for the email
Does any1 have a problem with the test tone facility?
no signal is sent to subwoofer?

The signal is sent to the subwoofer but you can't hear it. Basically the signal is high frequency and the subwoofer is incapable of playing such a high frequency sound. You may ask why it sends the signal to the speaker anyway all I can guess is that a different subwoofer or speaker package you would hear it.
As long as your sub woofer is working for films there isn't a problem. It is a minor irritation I must admit though but the subwoofer forms no part of the 3d nature of surround sound it is the .1 in the 5.1 name for this reason.
