Can scratched DVDs be repaired?
Question:

:)

Answers:

I suppose it depends how deep the scratches are ?
There are some products on the market to remove light scratches but having not tried them i couldn`t tell you how effective they are.

Yes, I've seen something somewhere like that but wasn't sure of the effectiveness. I've got a DVD which I guess the cat got at some stage.

The disc repair service at thatz DVD (http://www.thatzdvd.com/disc_repair.asp) fixed my Hard Boiled disc that was scratched and would freeze at certain point in the film.

Answers:

If the scratch isn't too deep just use a bit of toothpaste and plenty of water. The toothpaste is a mild abrasive and if you rub lightly it'll polish out any scratches.
Sounds a bit unlikely I know but it really does work as I've done it a few times myself.

Argos do something called skipdoctor that repairs scratches. I recently repaired a nasty scratch using Displex (mobile phone display polish). It hasn't disappeared but the disc plays fine.

I recently received a faulty copy of Tigerland from DVDsoon. It had a scratch approximately one inch long in the same direction as the data . As the disc only cost me £2.66, I really couldn't be bothered to send it back to Canada, so I thought I'd try your tip about the toothpaste.
I tried the method about ten seperate times on the disc, but the toothpaste caused lots of very fine scratches without actually fixing the problem. I think it was because (a) the scratch was too deep and/or the toothpaste was just not abrasive enuff.
Anyway, I remembered reading somewhere that you can use 'T-Cut' (the car paint improver) for this purpose. As I had already rendered the disc unsuitable :brickwall for sending back to DVDSoon, I thought 'why not' and gave the T-Cut a try (from a rusting tin I found in my garage).
Would you bloomin believe it - it actually worked . The big scratch became much less distinct and the disc stopped freezing at 56 minutes as it had done before.
The moral of this story is: send the disc back and get a brand new perfect copy if at all possible. If it's out of it's 'guarantee period', and the disc won't play, then T-Cut's worth a try.
Hore this helps - And no, I'm not a wholesaler for T-Cut!
Jonathan.
