Question:
Has anyone seen a review of the Proline DVD1040 dvd player (the one for £49.95 from Comet)?
Is it any good?
(Basically is it any better than watching DVD's through the X-Box and what's it like for playing music through it)
I've got the X-Box currently connected (for sound) through an optical cable to a Kenwood Amp (KRF-V4060D) which in turn is hooked up to Mission FS2 (NXT) Surround Speakers.
For the visuals the X-Box is scarted up to our Toshiba 28W93B.
The problem is that the amp has only one optical in and the Toshiba has only two scart sockets (so one is already used for our cable tv box). If I was to go for a seperate DVD player I would have to unhook the X-Box and thus only connect it when I wanted to play it (that is unless someone has a suggestion as to how I could have it all without the visual/sound drop out you get from using a scart splitter).
I would expect the X-Box to perform better in all honestly. Don't know for sure but the X-Box is a pretty good DVD player, when it came out it was generally considered to be pretty much equal in quality to a player of the same price.
I watch the occaisional DVD on my X-Box and it doesn't look awful in comparison to my £900 Sony player, not quite as good in a few areas but not bad at all.
Only advantage of the player is that it would probably be multi-region.
Cheers Neil,
Anyone else any views on this matter?

I would get that player checked. A £900 dvd player should absolutely bury an xbox.
Well, it's not a £900 quid player anymore, it is nearly 4 years old and technology has moved on. It's definitely much better than the X-Box but the difference is not as much as a lot of people would probably expect. The place I notice the most difference is in dark areas, shadows appear very grainy on the X-Box compared to the Sony, but overall I think it stands up pretty well in a comparison.
Yes the X-Box is good except when it comes to dark areas which do become grainy and artefactey. It is this which bugs me about the X-Box as a DVD player, colourful stuff is fine, fast moving action is fine but dark and moody it just can't do.
So is the Proline player multi-region?
If it's like the old one then there is a simple handset hack.
I had the old Proline 2000 and after about 2 and a half years of continuous use its finally dying on me. I was only going to keep it for a year, but it did everything i wanted pretty well.
Not sure about this new one, at £50 im not sure how good it will be, probably best to find a review.
