Question:
Hi all,
I'm looking at buying my first Dolby Digital/DTS Amplifier & a set of speakers. Since it will be my first Amp & speakers I'm not looking at spending too much.
I've seen a few DD/DTS Amps in Richer Sounds for under/around £200....looking for something around that price.
And if possible a set of speakers (fronts/rears/centre/sub) for around £150.
Just need some suggestions, to know what are good performers for around these prices, and the best places to get them.
Thanks :)
I 've got a pretty nice set up right now. I'm kind of picky about who I buy my equipment from, but I've found that www.overstock.com usually has some great deals on both JVC and Sony. Especially if your pressed for money. Check it out. You may find a steal.

Unfortunately they are a US site, and most members here are UK based. But welcome to the forums.
I recently bought a Panasonic SAHE70 amp, it does DD, DTS, and PLII.....for £130 from RS (web price of £150 price-beat to Empire Direct's £140).....extremely pleased with it..plus some Eltax Liberty 5+ fronts, a Liberty Centre, and 2 Linear Response bipolar rears...all for £150...however, unfortunately, the price for this package has just gone up to £250, but I used a saved copy of the website showing the old price to price-match it ;)
They are oustanding for the price...no need for a sub in the room at all I've found...
If these are out of your budget, I've heard good things about other Eltax budget packs...Curry's were selling a 5-pack set for £150 IIRC...
You need to decide on a budget... then you can choose the equipment. In my limited experience, most of the budget end stuff is quite similar; low-mid end (£500-£1000) is pretty good value especially for small rooms. But if you're spending in the region of £2000+ (mid range) then the difference is outstanding. I've never heard high end stuff but people in the biz say it's amazing (too much money than sense???) :D
I just put together a system for a little over £700, all the stuff was bourght from Richer Sounds in Liverpool,it comprises of the following:
Sony STRDB780S £190 (Price Match from Empiredirect.co.uk)
Toshiba SD220E MR £99.95 (price was in one of thier free leaflets)
Eltax Liberty 5.1 £150 (price match from RS whathifi advert)
Eltax Sub 10 £99.95 (End of Line special)
Speaker cable & banna plugs £60 (my room quite small so half of that was for the banna plugs)
2*1.0meter toslink cables £40 for dvd and ps2
So did it all for just about £640, and it sounds amazing - am really happy with it...now i just need a widescreen 32" tv.
