Question:
Toshiba rptv (50wh18) settings help!
i need to know the settings for it please , also how do i go into the service menu and reset the factory settings?
There're no universal settings, best to use something like AVIA to set the contrast and brightness (neither should exceed 50), as well as colour and tint.
Here are some service mode and convergence mode instructions which I posted elsewhere:
Press mute on the remote and release
Press mute on the remote again and hold,
At the same time press the menu key on the TV’s front panel
You should then see an “S” appear in the top right of the screen
At the same time the first service parameter “RCUT” should appear in the mode top left of the screen together with its setting value below.
Now the program buttons on the remote select the next and previous options, the volume +/_ are used to increase/decrease the selected parameter values. To get out of the service menu, you'll have to turn off the TV via the remote.
If you're new to this, then it would be a good idea to write down the original values before changing anything. Things which can be altered include HPOS and VPOS (horizontal and vertical position), HIT (height), WID (width) (the latter two are great for reducing overscan so that you can see more of the picture as intended). There are also parameters for adjusting geometry, but I find that it's better to solve geometry problems by adjusting the individual guns in the convergence menu. For example, I had a mild rainbow curve at the top of my screen that was quite annoying but I thought it's just something I had to put up with. Not so! You can solve all geometry problems by adjusting the grids inside the convergence menu (which is a bit more complicated than the service menu, and I must advise everyone to proceed with caution).
I didn't write the following myself, so big thanks to the original author:
From the service menu you can select the screen mode with the size key on the remote, (although it probably best to do this before entering service mode). Also pay attention to the source that was selected when entering service mode. This is important when you want to set NTSC convergence, so ensure that the NTSC output of your dvd is selected when you want to do this.
Press the yellow teletext key to enter the service convergence grids.
Unlike the user convergence setting, all three-colour tubes can be manipulated independently from here.
The controls are as follows
Red Turn on/off the red grid
Green Turn on/off the green grid
Blue Turn on/off the blue grid
Yellow Save and Exit convergence mode
2 UP
4 Left
6 Right
8 Down
The 3 key changes the colour of the cursor and hence the colour grid that will be modified
Having moved the cursor to the grid point that you want to modify you then need to use the “5” key to select the point.
At this stage the cursor should stop flashing and become solid, you can then use the other number keys to adjust your chosen colour grid.
Use the “5” key again once finished to fix that point and place the cursor back in the flashing mode where it can be moved around the screen
You may find it easier to use one of the colour grids as a reference point to which the other two can be converged.
I find it easier to use green as the reference can bring the red into line.
Then to bring blue into line with the red.
For some reason the blue seems a lot harder to see accurately and on my set at least appears to be less well focused than the other two.
Be aware though that adjusting one point on the grid can affect neighbouring points. So you may have to go back and readjust certain points to get things just so.
Finally once finished press the yellow key to save the setting,
(The screen looks like the convergence and geometry have totally gone out of the window while this happens). Press the yellow key again to exit. You'll need to repeat this for each picture mode: PAL 4:3, PAL wide, NTSC 4:3 and NTSC wide. Turn off the TV to exit from service mode.
It takes a lot of time and trial and error (and a bit of courage!) to get things right, but it's really worth it.
is there anywhere in the uk where i can get a guy to come out and calabrate this for me?
Come on jericho, spill the beans, what have you done..?
ive done nothing , just have a blue line flashing in the top of the movie when it goes back
also the white writing is ghosting a bit
If the TV is still under guarantee, either give your retailer a call or failing that, Toshiba UK are always worth a try. I got them to fix my convergence (which way out) within two weeks of buying my 40" RPTV. They're much better at fixing the convergence than their local service agent were a few months back!
is there a calabration engineer anyone knows of?

Build it and they will come!
I am unfamilier with this device but am always up to learn new tricks. Very busy just now but will be back to reply soon!
