JVC XV-N33SL DVD Player - Multiregion via remote code?
Question:

A question on behalf of a friend here. Does anyone know if there is a code or mechanism to allow the JVC XV-N33SL DVD Player to become a multi-region dvd player?
Getting the player chipped is not an option my friend is keen on but some simple remote code or other would be of interest.
The usual thanks in advance to any wise owls... :)
PS: I think the "SL" bit at the end of the player's name refers to the player being silver, so any info regarding XV-N33 is probably also of interest...

Sorry Paul, I looked around for a bit but didn't find anything useful. I did find a couple of references that spoke about various players and the general consensus I drew from those was that for mainstream brands, only Philips regularly seem to provide their players with a "remote hack" or service menu option to convert them to multi-region status.
The same references stated that nearly all players from Sony, JVC, Pioneer et-al are not able to be modified so easily. (ie: without chipping them)
I also checked Techtronics website to see if they offered an upgrade service for this player (url=http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-000-dvd-summary.html]see here[/url]) but they don't. I didn't check any other 'modders' given that Techtronics are generally ahead of the game in this field.
So, the long and the short is that I've had no success and since the player's owner has now taken the machine out of the country their options are now limited anyway so I've not continued my search.
If you (or anyone else) ever discovers that there is a "remote hack" or equivalent though I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know still because I can always then pass that info on and look like the sage guru of "techy things" that people one rung below me on the ladder of being able to operate the video remote believe me to be! :)
Thanks,
Mark.

I would generally disagree that the big jap playerd don't have region hacking available via the original remote. It seems checking;
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks
That most brands seem to have some region hackable players however the jap brands seem to keep the info close to their chests and sony make it harder by needing a special remote which sometimes you can emulate by using a pocket pc of some sort. It seems the reality is that nearly all players can be hacked via remote but the information to do this isn't known about all players. Generally the chinese brands give out the info themselves without any problem as do the korean brands like samsung but a lot of info on jap players is harder to come by so its very hit and miss.
Thanks to customers returning unhackable players to shops because they can't play their region 1 dvds many of the jap firms are now giving in to consumer pressure and making the information more freely available. You only have to look at the huge discounting on current Sony home cinema DAV systems to realise their well reviewed but less easy to hack systems simply don't sell well. Certainly I wouldn't consider a region 2 only dvd player and neither would I want a system that has to be hacked with a chip or need a special remote as there are alternative systems that don't give you this hassle.
Sadly though JVC are also pretty bad in this regard.
However you could try holding down 'stop' on the main unit until 'initial' appears in the display and then quickly inserting the dvd and pressing play as this works for some jvc units. Alternatively try it with the dvd in place in case that works so that you can press play quicker.
