KEF2005 - general advice required
Question:

I've just upgraded my amp to a Sony 1080 and the DVD player is a Sony 725. I've been looking at speakers and I've come across the KEF 2005's which are of interest.
The 'viewing room' is 5.4x3.2m and the screen will be on the 5.4m wall and couch along the other 5.4m wall.
Just wondering if this is a suitable room size for the Kefs?
What is the sound like from the speakers when listening to normal 2 channel audio CD's and radio? Do they have the bass, or do you need to put the amp in some mode whereby the subwoofer is used?
How do people mount the speakers? Ive been told there are stands but they are silly money, so I presume most attach to the wall?

Hi - I have the KHT2005 (including one extra centre rear for EX & ES) - My room is relatively small at 16'x14' (no idea what that is in metres sorry) - most people are blown away at how good they sound & I luv em of course)
As regards bass with 2 channel - I listen to CDS with my amp in either "pro logic" or "5 channel stereo" (my amp is a Denon 3801) - the amp uses the sub in all modes (I suppose you could turn it off if you wanted - but I like bass so I dont!)

Got much the same size room and setup as PaulBoy but with a Denon 2802 amp. Use them quite happily for CDs in stereo and it automatically routes the low end stuff to the sub. Quite happy with that setup and it does sound great for movies, especially EX and ES :)

On my Sony 830, with KEFs, if the Speaker size is set to small and the amp set to Auto Format Decode the LF is routed thru the subwoofer channel. If the amp is set to "2 Ch" it ain't....

Thanks for the replies. Lastly, how have you all mounted the speakers?

Howard - I would like stands for my front speakers but as you noticed Kef ones are "slightly overpriced" to be polite ... I have my rear three wall mounted which is easy to do (two screws for each which the stand slips over)

Thanks PaulBoy.
I think I'm going to go with the Kefs. I really wanted the Acoustic Energy Evo 3b's but i think they are too big for my room and will get in the way. (I have big speakers in another room for my 'proper' hifi and really want something smaller for the AV.)
I will probably mount the Kefs onto the walls again, so that they are out of the way and not taking floor space. Have you mounted them at ear level or have you mounted them high and aimed them downwards?
Is it really worth getting centre rear speaker?

Answers:

Howard - I mounted my rears at ear level (my previous setup was "tucked away" up high & I really prefer the sound from the setup now at ear level)
As regards the centre rear I believe it is well worth it - for those movies so encoded it adds to the overall sound IMO - in certain scenes from LOTR-FOTR for example very distinct sounds are mixed to the centre rear (on a couple of occasions enough to make you jump out of your seat!) I am not so keen in using the centre rear for movies that are no so encoded but I have heard from some people who think it works fine
On music / concert DVD stuff the centre rear can add to the overall "all round you" atmosphere (I prefer my concert stuff to be "staged" as per the concert i.e. using the front three speakers in the main with just the rears for a bit of "fill" & "atmosphere" - applause etc - although there are a few exceptions like The Eagles / Roger Waters where the music is carefully mixed to all speakers ... Dont get me started on DVD-A either ;)

Thanks Paul.
Picked the Kef's up this morning and the 1080 amp. :)
Unfortunately, it will be a couple of weeks before they get installed:oh-hum:
Still, plenty of time to read the manuals!

Having thought about the Eltax Power Tower Evolution 5.2, these Kefs look gorgeous and I am sure they would sound better too.
