Question:
Can someone tell me why cd playback can sometimes sound distorted on dvd players? I've only recently started to use my dvd player to play cd's and some, not all, of my cd's sound distorted?
Thanks.
I've never noticed it...
Thanks that's really helpful. Now I know why I've not posted on here for three months, thanks for reminding me....
CD's were designed to work with a different laser to DVD's, however to keep the cost down many players just use the DVD laser. This introduces Jitter to the digital signal which can cause a degradeation in the sound quality. Good quality players either use seperate lasers or more advanced electroincs on over come this problem. This maybe the cause of your distorted sound.
Thanks Jpwhaley:)
Just one last thing. The dvd laser can't damage cd's can it? Probably a daft question but just wondering, you know, over a period of time perhaps?
No it can't damage the disc. The difference between the two is just the wavelength. If I remember correctly a CD laser is Infra Red & DVD is just a RED laser. The smaller wavelength of a Red laser allows you to store more on a disc. In the same way the new Sony BlueRay uses, as its name suggests a blue laser which is even smaller still to give you the 20GB+ storage.
Have you cleaned your DVD player recently, this might help?
Yes I've cleaned it quite recently. It doesn't happen on all cd's, some sound just as good as though theyr'e being played through a cd player where as othyers sound distorted. Still now you've put my mind at rest that there's no chance of any damage and that it's quite normal on a mid range dvd player I can put up with it. Thanks for your time Jpwhaley:)
Thanks.
