Big screen TV quality
Question:

I have just got my first widescreen TV and have a couple of questions.
It is a 36" and I have noticed that some of my DVD's do not look as clear as when I played them on on old 20" TV. I know its not my set or TV as I put in a Superbit title and this looked amazing.
So does having a large screen TV mean losing out on a little quality? The TV in question is a Toshiba 36ZD26 and the DVD player is a Pioneer 656. I have not had time to test many DVDs but have watched a couple of R1 season two Stargate.

Sit further back
The bigger the set the 'lesser' thw quality, unless you got the cash for a plasma ;)

I was under the impression that CRT's were better quality then Plasmas?
Is it actually bigger is lesser quality or that there is a big difference between DVD transfers? I have been able to try a few more disc and they looked awsome. Unfortunatly on TV shows (Startgate and B5) the TV seemed to magnify every little blemish.

I run on a 47" RPTV and find the quality awsome at about 8-10' sitting distance, especially on Progressive Scan mode. However a you do notice any little imperfections especially on broadcast material (but luckily I also get HDTV broadcasts here :) )

Look at the screem close up - you`ll notice that the pixels actually get larger the further the screen extends to the left and right - a tradeoff furing manufacturer. Even so, you should still notice better quality then your old TV. Have you got any AI or DNR/ 100 hz switched on (if watching dvd or watching digital tv it can cause problems, leave it switched off!).

First thing to do is switch off the Sharpness circuitry. This will make the picture appear soft, but is in fact the 'natural' image, and over the following days you will notice the detail returns,a strange spooky concept but it does.Sharpness circuitry magnifies any imperfection in the source material, and changes the definition of edges of objects.

Cheers guys, I have turned off all the digital jiggery and the picture looks fab. I think the problem is with the Stargate DVDs as there is another thread on here about it.

You have to remember also that cos the picture is so big you will be able to see any faults in transfer etc much easier
Suggest problem is source material rather than your display.

For pure picture quality in my experience even a 5 grand plasma is not as good as say an Aconda 32 inch. But Plasmas are all about size, so quality takes a bit of a back seat anyhow.
