Marantz amp, CD audio and PEAK light - help!
Question:

Hi chaps, just got a Marantz SR5300, and I've noticed that on Analogue CD playback the PEAK led is flashing on for some disks intermittently, all the time for others, or not at all on some.
I can't hear any distortion when the light is on.
I used to put a Technics SLPG580 through it, and could stop it on the problem disks by turning down the line output (you can do this on that deck). It was an old deck, so i thought maybe it was the player.
I've just replaced it with my Marantz DV4300 for CD playback but I still get the light coming on in the same circumstances... However, it has always been fine playing CD's and DVD's using the digital input.
Is this the way a lot of CD's are poorly mastered, or are my amp's CD inputs far too sensitive? Is this a fault with the amp, or does anyone else with the same kit get this?

The peak indicator is telling you that the line input is clipping, which can in extreme circumstances over a period of time damage your speakers crossover. You need to turn down the line level on your CD player if possible, or use the amps imput adjust if it has it (not sure on the SR5300, never checked).

Thanks Justin, there's no line level output (that I'm aware of) on the DV4300 player unlike my old Technics, and I don't know of an input adjust on the amp.
There is an Attenuator option on the amp though which does turn the light off, but I was wary if this would *just* reduce the input level, or chuck the signal through loads of (unwanted) processing...
If the Attenuator is fairly 'clean' with how it deals with the signal, I can easily program this operation into my Pronto's CD mode.
Any ideas fellas? :)

This is what the Attenuator button does. Does this look OK chaps???
3 ATT (attenuator) button
When the input signal is too high and the voice distorts even by throttling the SR5300 VOLUME control, turn on this function. “ATT” is indicated when this function is activated. The input level is reduced. Attenuator is invalid for use with the output signal of “REC OUT”.
