Question:
Removing another disc from my trusty Pioneer 636D, it struck me that I've owned this player for over two years. I bourght it for £350ish, which is more than I'd spend if I were buying a new player now - but it's served me very well I must admit. On board DTS/DD decoders, super picture quality and very solid overall.
I reckon I'll be holding onto it for a fair while yet...
I bought my Sony 710 about four years ago for 570.00 then I had to fork out another 90.00 to get it chipped.
It has never let me down though.
Still got (and use regularly) my old Jap Sony DVPS7700 imported in `98 ;) My main system machine of a Sony DVPNS9000ES is getting on for 3 years old now, and has outlasted 2 Arcam FMJ DV27s, A Tosh 9000 and a Denon DVD-A1!
If there were only something out there worth replacing it with (beleive me tried loads out).. that actually didn`t have problems after a while....
My current machines are about a year old, however my UK machine was a Pioneer 717 bought when they first came out for about 500 quid and chipped for another 100. This is stil going strong as a friend has it when I gave it to her to replace her old Alba player which had trouble with a lot of discs.
Just replaced my Wharfie 750 after over 3(!!!) years of solid service (available here... &threadid=178346 :) ).
There were no problems with the player really, just that I wanted to get a newer player to match my new gold Marantz SR5300, so I treated myself to a luvverly slimline Marantz DV4300. Excellent with CD's too.
Funny really, the only improvements I've noticed in the last 3 years are component video and progressive scan becoming more available to cheaper machines, and SA-CD/DVD-A in the mid-range models... plus there seem to be less 'problem disks'.
I've had my Pioneer 444 for about 9 months. Before that I had a Tosh 100 for two years and before that a Samsung 709 for about a year.
I gave the Samsung to my parents because it was having problems with some of my R1 discs, and I sold the Tosh because I wanted to start putting stuff on VCD/SVCD but the Tosh didn't like cdrs or SVCDs.
The Pioneer so far has worked flawlessly, so if that continues I can see me keeping it for a very long time! Fantastic little player.
Had my Panasonic DVDA360 since 1999, when I swapped my non-Matrix-playing year old Samsung 907 for it. Still going strong, but just replaced it with a Toshiba 520 (for the prog scan output) and a Panasonic E50 (cos it records)
Had my Toshiba SD220e for 7.........days!!
I had a Philips 701 before that which I had for over 2 years with flawless service. I read about the fact that Philips scored poorly in picture quality during reviews and couldn't understand it - until I bought the inlaws a Tosh SD110 at xmas - the picture quality blew me away and I had to change asap.

Hey - another DVDA360 user here - bought in '99 - still going strong with anything I throw at it!!:)
I've had my Sony DVD-336 for 2 & 1/2 years now I suppose. Seems like yesterday got it
Sony 725, now 4 years old and still going perfectly.
Still have my Pioneer 717, had for 3 yrs, :D served me well, only used as second player now (bedroom) latest now is the Philips 980 RW :)
Another Panasonic a360 user - still fine and a really excellent picture.
Encore DV450, one of the original budget kings, for 3 years :)
Pioneer DV-454 since about September last year.
Had a LG3350e before that for about 2 years.
My Wharfedale 750 [Mk1] did me roud for three years, but then started having trouble playing anything so a month and three days ago I bought a Pioneer DV-656a and my, hasn't technology moved on some!
Ordered some DVD-A and SACD titles to try out too! :D
Boink!
Had my Arcam DV27 FMJ since last May and my Panasonic portable for nearly 3 years.
Got my Sony DVP NS300 on the 15/01/01 and still going strong. Dont think i'll get a new for a while yet.
Pioneer 525 that I have had for about 4 years. Paid £299 for it multiregion.
It's always been a bit noisy on some discs but otherwise has been a good servant
Thinking of changing to a Teac DVD/Amp mini combo soon.
First dvd player was ye olde panasonic a360, sold it 12 months ago and its still going strong. Now the proud owner of a pioneer 656a and its stunning.
1st was the Good Sony 725 for 2 years
2nd was the Good LG 3350e for 2 years
3rd & Now Toshiba 900e:thumbs:
4th ?? not sure yet. I'll be looking around at the end of 2003
And the Samsung on my laptop..only used it 4 times
cheers Steve
sony s735
the daddy of dvd players
only needed to have it modded - and after 3 years its still running strong!!
I've had my Sony DVP-S336 for nearly 3 years now I guess :) its been a brilliant player as far as I'm concerned. And I'll probably keep it until the old girl packs in ;)
Still got my first player: a Toshiba SD2109 bought in November 1999. Remember BLACK?
I've had my Pioneer 656a http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/smokin.giffor about six months, before that I had a Pioneer 626 which I was using since 98. (gave this to my brother still working fine)http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/smokin.gif

Me too, I've had mine for over 3 1\2 years now. Never had a problem with it, stunning quality and sound. paid £300 for it then (multiregion).
Its weird that you can now pick up quality DVD players for less than some video recorders !
Sony 715 - she'll be 5 in September!!! Very good machine and even the lack of DTS hasn't made me want to change it. Cost about £590 chipped from Upgrade Heaven. I would probably only spend half of that if I were to upgrade now!
Andrew
Sony 525 coming up to 4 years old, with chipping it came in at £600
My Samsung 709 is rapidly approaching it's 4th birthday. I paid £250 at RicherSounds for it back in the day and that was considered an 'ultra budget' machine with the nearest competitor about £100 more
Amazingly since I updated the firmware in the first year I've only had one disc that wouldn't play (rental Gone in 60 seconds R2) but could be persuaded if you could skip the menu and my ToyStory and TS2 R1 discs won't play back anymore :(
My first player was a DVD ROM with decoder called a Creative Labs DXR2.
I then got a Samsung 807. Then was the Sony 525D, I gave my brother the 807. I was given a Encore 450 player.
I now have a Sony 900V and my brother has the Sony 525D. I still have the Encore player and hopefully sometime this year get a Panasonic HS2 recorder.
I've got a Pioneer DV-747a which I've had since its initial release date. Very happy with it and shouldn't need to upgrade for a few years yet....yeah right. Prior to that I had a Sony 725 which served me well for several years. :)
Still got my Sony 725, it's about 3 years old.

Yup, had one of these after junking my Pana A100 in 97, then changed the 715 to the 7700 upwards as per my earlier post:)

Yep, another 2109 owner here. It's still working fine so I don't see me upgrading until I have a progressive scan display.
Another happy Samsung 709 owner - coming up on it's 4th birthday soon :D
1st player was a samsung dvd 511 but the laser had many probs.
Now have a jvc XV-S302 since january... used it 3 times
Owner Of A Pioneer 515, for 5 years!! Still going strong!
About 3 and a half years for my Sony 325. Cost me about £400 modded from Techtronics. Still going strong and I wouldn't part with it mainly because most the new models don't come with two SCARTs (which is very handy for routing RGB from other devices as even though my telly's got loads of sockets, as usual only one is RGB :oh-hum: ).
My parent's have got a new Sony that cost just over £100 (modded too), and it plays MP3s I think. At first glance it would seem it exceeds my player at a fraction of the price, however you can tell it's a bit 'budget' as the menus are more basic and there's only one SCART. I've no idea how it compares on quality as their TV isn't too great.
I think if I upgraded now it would be to one that handles VCD, S-VCD, most writable DVD formats, CD-Rs and RWs and MP3s, but still has to have 2 SCARTs with RGB pass through and be at least as good quality (picture and sound) as the old 325 I've got. I'm in no rush to do anything like this though and in fact rather than upgrade the player I'm more likely to make myself a 'media-server' PC (just need to resolve the issue of having the thing in another room, as it's too noisy for the living room). Mind you, looking at the stuff Creative produce now you could build a far better DVD player just using their audio cards (the Audigy2 seems to be a DD6.1 EX decoder and even DVD-A decoder, which is better than my DVD player and amp put together)
Yet another Tosh 2109 owner here:)
Hardly any probs with it and the picture quality is still great. I wouldn't bother upgrading unless anyone told me that a newer player would give a better pic quality
Anyone?;)
Samsung 709 - Aug 1999 - £250 new. Sold to mate at work for £50 in 2001, still going.
Samsung 511 - Dec 2000 - Free from Carphone Warehouse, still going.
Pioneer 737 - About £350 in 2001. Cracking player, still going.
Samsung 807 since March 1999
Toshiba SD100 since July 2000
Toshiba SD900 since June 2002
Very happy with the SD900 and have no plans to upgrade any time soon.
Sony 525D coming up to 5 years now
Agree with Jamesw and Sheepdip. Had my Tosh 2109 since Nov 1999 (£300 chipped from Techtronics) and will replace it when someone convinces me that a new one will give me a better picture!
Got two PC DVD drives for the kids though...
Tosh 220 for about 3 months now, prior to that a Pioneer DVL-909 for about 4 1/2 years. That's the combi LD & DVD jobbie cos at the time I was hedging my bets about DVD taking off. Cost about 800 quid new (ouch). First thing I did was send it off to Codefreedvd in Glasgow for a chipping :)
Still got it, in fact - works fine, but being 2nd gen lacks the finesse,
features etc of more modern stuff. And for some bizarre reason it won't play the Godfather trilogy. Plus it's huge :D
GJ
Pioneer 717 for about 4 and half years now. Great player, I still don't feel the need to change it now my amp is another story...(Sony STRDB930)
I have had a pioneer 515 for nearly 4 years. Brought a Pioneer 454 late last year and moved the other one upstairs. Trouble is that I decided that i didn't like it on a 14 inch tv set so brought a 24 inch widescreen, then I missed the sound, as my downstairs is hooked up to a 6.1 system so ended up buying a pioneer av51 system for my bedroom.
They really should give warnings about upgradeitus.
Replaced my 3 year old Wharfedale 750 last week for a nice new Sony DVP-NS705V. Had a Samsung for just under a year before that.
February 98 - March 99: Panasonic A100
March 99 - Present: Sony 7700
I would have upgraded to a progressive scan player by now but I'm unemployed so don't have the cash:(
Pioneer 626D bought when they were new...
Sammy 709 since around 1999/2000 when it cost £150ish.
Only problem was the digital out was flakey but when i looked (rather than send back to mastercare!) all the problem was that the solder had cracked (over a few years) and it wasnt making contact.
a quick solder and it works fine. Still plays all disks, but noticed recently that the layer change has slowed down a bit.
No idea of the quality of newer ones but find the 709 sound is fine (using mid range Kenwood amp and cheapish Asda surround speakers from years ago). The pic could be better (apears to have large patches of a single colour, much like a 256 colour jpeg has) but this is only on some disks.
Plays R1 and DTS, though again DTS on some disks is slightly out of sync.
If i bought again it would be a newer one that supports the latest tricks (sacd and the like) and is R1 hackable.
Panasonic DVD-RV60 for 2 years now. Faultless and plays everything I throw at it. Fantastic picture.
Had my Sony 335 for 3 years now - bloody thing won't break down.. :|
Panasonic RA61 - not sure how long, somewhere between 1 and 2 yrs. since it came out anyway. never let me down and was bought to replace a trusty Mk1 Wharfie 750 :)
Pioneer 717 i've had for about 4 years.
Pioneer 656 - had since August 2002
Pioneer 350 - ditto
Pioneer 737 - had since November 2001
Panasonic RV81 - November 2002
Pioneer 606D - Jan 99
656 is my main player - might upgrade this year if they bring out a pal prog version of the 757

Do you watch them all at the same time? :D
no but I do have a player in four rooms in the house and the 606D lives in happy retirement at my parents. Theres a PS2 knocking around as well
Have also owned a samsung 807, a further 606D, a Panasonic A110 and A7, a Scan player, a Warfdale and the daddy of them all an RCA 5500P - imported from the US in October 97.
Thats before we get to the PCs...
Samsung 709. Hacked and plays everything (except it won't play my r4 Shrek properly any more)

i think i know what you're getting at. I simply will NOT replace my current player until it actually dies on me. It does everything I want to, so even though i know having a nice sleek new player would be great, I know I don't actually NEED one. So I'm sticking with what I have until I accidentally fall on it
I have had my latest (sony DVP-NS905V) all of one day!
Have a Wharfdale 750 for 3.5 years back home but my Pioneer DV350 form November last year is my new machine.

Sounds about right, I think I got mie around christmas time (so a little while after it came out) but got a 5yr warranty on it and not had to use it (it had the firmware hack so never had to be opened :) ) I was always impressed with it, and still think it was one of the best looking players around. I was looking at the Pioneer Elite players here, but I needed something with a PAL-->NTSC converter (Malata) and my other player I got was when I was in a hotel so just had to be cheap (Panny RP-62s Prog Scan)
Pioneer NSDV-55 nearly 3 years and I still love the damn thing to bits.
Bought it from Upgrade heaven and I've never regretted it. SPR DTS still sounds as good as it did when I first got it.
Pioneer 646A from UGH also. Had it a little over two years. Great machine. Also got a Panasonic LA95 portable for about a year and a half from the same guys. I bought it primarily for use as a portable DVD but it constantly amazes me how good a CD player it is through headphones. Streets ahead of any other portable CD player i've heard.
Pioneer 626D from Nov 1999 > August 02
Pioneer 454s from August > last week
Harmon/Kardon DVD 25 from Justin's power buy > until i die (or StarWars comes out on BluRay...)
Still using my first player, Panasonic A350, late 98/early 99.
Its showing its age now, so will be replaced by a pioneer 656a sometime very soon.
Still using my Pioneer 505 HK from 4.5 years ago.
Samsung 709 - started cooking disks, gave to GF who didnt care
Pioneer 530 - noisy drive and bitstream dropouts (lasted 3 days)
Sony 336 - gave up playing disks after 12 months
Pioneer 444 - still got it
I reckon I'll be holding onto it for a fair while yet...

Answers:
no but I do have a player in four rooms in the house and the 606D lives in happy retirement at my parents. Theres a PS2 knocking around as well
Have also owned a samsung 807, a further 606D, a Panasonic A110 and A7, a Scan player, a Warfdale and the daddy of them all an RCA 5500P - imported from the US in October 97.
Thats before we get to the PCs...

i think i know what you're getting at. I simply will NOT replace my current player until it actually dies on me. It does everything I want to, so even though i know having a nice sleek new player would be great, I know I don't actually NEED one. So I'm sticking with what I have until I accidentally fall on it

My chipped 717 cost the same....I think it`s 3 years old.
