Get rid of great Kefs for not so great B&Ws???
Question:

Just moved house & cinema lounge is smaller than before. Current sound set-up:
Front L&R: 2x B&W CDM-2 SEs on Alphason stands
Centre: B&W CDM SE
L&R surrounds: 2x KEF Q35.2 Floorstanders
Rear centre: 2x KEF 55s satellites on bookcase
Amp: Denon AVR 3801
Question: Should I trade in my Kef floorstanders for some B&W DM 601s (or 602s/603s) which I could possibly wall mount & another cheap B&W rear centre to replace the Kef 55s's? In order to save space, am I risking compromising on sound quality?
Chap at Superfi said my Kef Qs were excellent speakers and that none of the DM 600 range compared in terms of quality. What should I do? Keep the stuff or save space?

advice?? anyone????

601s aren't the best speakers for wall mounting - they like a bit of room around them and they're huge. Do you need your rear speakers to be matched with the fronts (multi channel music)? If yes then go with B&W - 2 pairs of DM600s might fit the bill or 1 pair 601s & 1 pair 600s if you want to structurally undermine your room.
If tonal matching isn't required - how about staying with Kef - Q1s are brilliant, look good and can handle wall mounting Q2s aren't the pretiest things but sound good. Little speakers designed for wall mounting, like Kef eggs could be the solution (my centre rear is a single egg & it does a top job).

I have my 601's wall mounted on my Hi Fi and they sound excellent. They are also not that big compared to some speakers. Although, the 600's are smaller.

Thanks for the tips guys. Ideally, I would like tonal matching... at the moment the sound set-up is great. If I went with B&W surrounds & a centre rear, would that compromise my current set-up?

If you have a small room (say 20 x 15) like mine, I don't feel that 7 speakers are needed since the gap between the rears is going to be quite small - so l/r rears + 1 surround back creates a convincing sound field. Could you use a centre speaker in this situation? Yes but it is not necessary (and some would advise you against this as the speaker construction is different from that of the other two surrounds). Due to price and size issues IMHO you would be better served by 3 surrounds (even if that means buying 4) than 2 + centre. However since tonal matching of the surround back is less of an issue than l/r (since multi channel music doesn't use the 6th speaker) you could use any suitable speaker.
Hope that helps rather than confuses :innocent:
