Blank DVDs
Question:

OK, got myself a new Panasonic E50 from dvdplayers.co.uk and I now need to get hold of some blank DVD-RAMs and DVD-Rs. I've been looking at blankdiscshop.co.uk and there seem to be four main types of DVD-R that are recommended - Traxdata, Memorex, Verbatim and Datasafe. They only have Mirror DVD-RAMs. Any recommendations on which of these (or any other reasonably priced discs) are best to go for?

Answers:

Up for this. DMRHS2 coming tomorrow so need to know same thing!

Just got my E50, this is the best place I've found for DVD-RAM cartridges:
http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/cgi-bin2/cdrmedia/listproducts.pl?type=direct&catid=23
(if the link complains about cookies, select dvd-ram from the left hand menu)
also
http://www.dvd-and-media.com/dvd-ram-media.htm
has a better selection which is slightly more expensive depending on brand.
Blankdiscshop is cheapest at the moment (that I've found) for bare disks, but I prefer cartridges and they do seem a little more reliable in the PC drive, haven't tried these in the E50

I hope you don't mind me asking, I have been looking at these Panasonic recorders.
For those with a Panasonic recorder, what made you choose it?
Also, is the only difference between the E50 and E60 juts the DV in? There seems to a lot of price difference between the two.
Is is possible to put a recording from RAM to a DVD-? I suppose I would need a DVD RAM drive for the PC to do this.
I do like the idea of DVD RAM (they remind me of Minidisc which I also like).

Kept reading about reliability with the Philips. The Pioneer costs way to much.
Ram also has great editing functions.
I'm gettting the HS2 with the hard drive, I'm hoping I can edit ram, transfer back to HD then write to -r but I'll let you know.

Just received a Panasonic E50 today. I've tended to notice the good rather than bad points so far - but that's typically me...
Good Points: Flexible MD-like Editing on DVD-RAM discs
Annoyances:
No Eject button on remote
AV input selector on remote is under a flap (until I pronto it)
No coax digital out
No way of copying DVD-RAM to a format playable on a DVD player without spending another £200 on a PC recorder

Answers:

I went for the panasonic E50 for 2 reasons
1) I already use DVD-RAM for data at home and work, and it eats the pants of all the other DVD formats for data.
2) The bad press the philips has been getting.
3) Unbeatable.com had a pricing error which should mean I get it for £311, but won't know until the Visa bill arrives :D
The flexible editing is by far the best function, especially if you plan to archive on the dvd-ram, it allows you to truly delete sections of video and regain the space, meaning it's easier to cram more programmes into the same space.
I was surprised to discover no coax digital out, but that at least means I can keep both my DVD players linked to my hifi (didn't get a multiregion E50).
 I've never understood why anyone would need an eject button on the remote, I haven't got a robot/dog to go and collect the disk from the machine, so I might as well push the button on the player itself.
Editing on PC is a bit of a pain, especially finding out the software that makes it possible, but I think I've managed it now, just need to write a DVD-R to test it out.

nwgarrat AFAIK both the 50 and 60 had DV inputs. Don't think the 30 does.

Oh, didn't realise that. Are you transferring camcorder stuff.
Happily I've got one on the HS2

According here http://www.avland.co.uk/dvd/dvdr.htm#dvdr the 50 does not have DV. There are pictures of the inputs.

Having the same DVD format on the computer as well as for the TV is a good idea.
If I had one, I go for the HS2. I just have to wait for the price to go down.

£699 at multiregionmagic if you can stretch to it.
Unlikely to fall much below £600 in the long term I would think.
Go on, you know you want to. Join me and CARL's club.

I'll probably use the dvd-ram recorder for my analogue SVHS camcorder, getting the video onto the pc is easier using this than it ever was using an analogue capture card, but if I ever go digital I think a PC interface is the way to go for me.
I've got a Tivo for the hard drive recording stuff, plus there's no comparison in functionality (I'm a ntl user so Sky+ is out - not that I'd ever touch Sky). But more to the point there's no way I could justify the cost to save a bit of pain editing on the PC (and that get's easier once it's be sussed).
Definitely think the recorder is a useful piece of kit, it's almost got the seal of approval from the other half, as it makes archiving of her gardening programmes a lot easier, and space efficient, not to mention accessing them later is a dream.

I've gone for hard disk overkill, one Sky+, one HS2 with drive and RAM. Think that'll be enough?

OK, a couple more questions.
I have a Sony IDTV. At the moment I use smartlink to record of the IDTV. All I need to do to record digital TV is press record. It automatically goes to AV1 (the Sony video) and records.
With these Panasonic, would I have to just select AV1/AV2 and then record. Would the recording record be in RGB quality.

Oh my God, DMRHS2 arrived this morning.
This thing is simply awesome, intuitive to use, great recording and a real bonus a really really stunning picture. Goldmember R2 blew me away (and I had a Sony 905!!).
Drawbacks at this stage seem to be slightly slow loading and power off times, lack of resume playback (without memorising one) and stupid place for skip buttons on remote!!
