Question:
Would I be correct in saying that when you press the progressive scan button the first time it displays the mode it is in ie. interlaced or progressive? I have experimented with this feature with different dvds and the interlaced image seems miles better. It seems more detailed, vibrant and colourful. Another thing I have noticed is that jaggies still appear in either mode, on horizontal scrolling images for example.
This cannot be right or have I got a dodgy player.
How are you connecting it to your TV? I think progressive is only available through component output.
It is connected through component.
Does your TV accept progressive component?
I knew somone would ask something like that! I should have said it is connected to a sanyo plv-z1 projector.
Hmmm. That will accept progressive - is there anything on the projector saying what signal it's receiving? Is it the same on both PAL and NTSC signals?
I use a Sony VW11 projector and Arcam DV27 which does PAL and NTSC progressive. Best disk to show up the effect is Star Trek Insurrection - the opening scene pans over a village and you can clearly see jaggies on the bridge, blurred canoes on the banks and many of the roof tiles giving a nasty moire effect. Another is Gladiator, the scene starts with an aerial shot of the Colliseum then pans over a gold eagle statue - you get a really nasty flashing effect.
Progressive should remove/minimise these undesirable effects if it's working OK. Can't say I notice any difference in colour reproduction/saturation when I switch (even to S-Video). The Arcam has 2 separate component outputs so I haven't used the interlaced versions to compare.
I think a quick search on www.avforums.com might help. I know there were some posts on this player some time ago, not very positive I'm afraid IIRC.
Maybe someone with a Z1 can offer some help/advice?
Nigel thanks for the continuing help.
I have got the projector set to auto, so, I will give the manual controls a try to see if this helps. I really noticed the jaggies on "Ice Age" whilst looking at some grass as it panned from right to left across the bottom of the picture (during the dodo scene). I also noticed at the start of "Gladiator" when the universal logo pans. Both scenes looked the same regardless of what mode the player was in.
I can live with the jaggies but the colour and detail problem is really annoying. Could anybody else with a 9900se clarify that when you press the progressive scan button once, it displays the mode it is in? It cannot be right that the picture gets better when changed to interlaced mode.
Yes when you press the P/L button the mode selected appears on the screen. I send the progressive signal to an HS10 pj and get crystal clear images with no jaggies
