The "OSE" (original special edition) is basically the standard machine with some UK tweaks, mainly to the actual PSU and audio output stages, which make the players better for cd-player use.
the DV4100OSE is 3 years old now, and best avoided as machines half the price outclass it for video performance. The DV4200 is also over a year old now, and is being phased out and replaced by the Dv4300.
If you are looking for a machine thats good with audio cd replay (rather then a dedicated £150-200 cd player) then something like a harman kardon DVD21/25 or Pioneer DV757 are worth considering, along with the Arcams - its all down to the system you have, and your budget really!
Hope that helps?

justin, would the dv4300 play cds as well as the dv4200ose which has been tweaked or what would the chances of a dv4300ose coming out,
it would be used through a sr4300 amp ideally (although not essential) i would like to keep with the marantz 'gold' thing and cut down on remotes
the hd21 & 25 did look very nice, i could afford the hd21, is it a case of splitting hairs between them or is one considerably better?

The most expensive part of a dvd player is it's laser, therefore it makes little sense imo to use it for cds.You can buy a decent Sony cd player for £80,or second hand. It's your cash though.

I use my pioneer 636d and digitheatre to play CDs. My old stereo broke a couple of years ago and I haven't bothered getting anything else. However, I hardly ever actually use it to play cds, because I just play mp3s on my computer.

napoleon, if the expensive bit is the laser, if its a good laser will it not play cds to a good standard? or is the laser designed for the dvd only.

And what about the bits that make a difference on sound quality then, such as dacs, tray, output stages and components. Why buy an extra cd player on top of a new dvd player, when you can get one that will sound as good as, if not better then a budget cd player for similar or less money then buying 2 seperate boxes?

The Dv4300 would, to be honest, be a better machine all round. The Dv4200 (ose) is an old LG design, hence the tweak. Marantz machines in gerneral would sound better for the same money then, for example, a pioneer or other similar budget machine. The 4300 also has prog scan as mentioned before, the Dv4200 is more basic.
The difference between the DVD21 and DVD25 is DVD21 is the 25 without prog scan ;)

I think the laser but primarily other components, as Justin pointed out, will determine sound reproduction.I just think that a cd player is designed for its job,a dvd player likewise.A lot of people think otherwise and don't want the extra box as pointed out by others.Quality second hand cd players are easily available though, which is why i would go down that route. The Tosh 520(multi-region of course) is a very nice player for dvds, certainly one to consider amongst your options.
Cables, speakers, stands, environment all contribute to sound reproduction, but i keep it simple;Sony XE530,2 sets of speakers and Kuni/Talisman playing loud. ;)
