Question:
I'm lookinf for some advice in buying speakers.
I have just brought a Pioneer 656 from Richer Sounds, and I have a little money left over to - finally - set-up a 5.1 Surround speaker system. I don't have enough to buy an amp/receiver just yet, so I'm looking to run the speakers directly from the Pioneer in-built Dolby Digital / DTS decoder.
I see that Richer Sounds do some pretty cheap Home Cinema Packages, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend any from there, or elsewhere. With the Pioneer I have a voucher to buy the Limit HC40 for £149 - is this any good? Would it give me DTS sound.
Any recommendations or advice is appreciated. Cheers.

Not possible mate, the signal from the player needs to be amplified.
Richers sell an amp for ~£60 that will do the job, though. Don't forget you'll have to shell out for 3x pairs on interconnects to hook it up.
EDIT - Flimber has added the link for the amp below..
You mean the Alchemist thing, Baps ? Looks very good value for £69.95 (reduced from the imaginary £200).

Mike. Yep - that's the one..
It's about time a cheapo amp was put on the market for the built-in decoder gang..
Yeah, I was wondering if I would need an amp to get DTS. Thanks for the advice and the link you guys, I'm just about to go and check it out.
But, am I right in assuming that I can still run Dolby Digital direct from my Pioneer 656 into a speaker package without a need for an amp at the moment? I just won't get DTS.
Cheers
i bought a speaker package from richers before christmas, i was going to pay £230 for a pair of floorstanders but i got two rears and a centre thrown in for an extra 70 quid, so 300 for the lot
that was the 'eltax symphony 8.1' package and i think they are now selling the lot for £250
i have no complaints, mine a running through a marantz sr4300 and sound very good,
if looks matter, they are beech and the speakers are white with a nice black trim
i would put a link up here but im crap with that stuff so i cant but i imagine they would be on the rs web site
oh, they are bi-wirable aswell, as for a SUB, i havnt bothered yet as the big floor standers have a tweeter & two big speakers and if they are bi-wired i have found the bottom speaker to handle explotions & big bass stuff really well
But, am I right in assuming that I can still run Dolby Digital direct from my Pioneer 656 into a speaker package without a need for an amp at the moment? I just won't get DTS.
Nope.
You'll need an amp even if you only want Pro-Logic...

Oh ok. I'm new to the whole Surround sound set-up (as you can probably tell) but the reason I assumed I could just connect up this Limit HC40 speaker package to my Pioneer 656 without the need for an amp was down to the promotional leaflet I got from Richer Sounds, to quote:
"You no longer need expensive hardware... to be able to realise the dream of Dolby Digital home cinema surround sound. Simply plug it in, turn it on and you could have effects whizzing around your living room in no time."
That, and seeing as the photo shows no amp with the DVD player, lead me to guess this package was all I needed? But I'm guessing I can stretch my budget and credit card to include an amp.

UPDATE: If anyone is interested: I've just contacted RS and they have assured me that the Limit HC40 comes with a built-in amp so will suit my Dolby Digital / DTS needs just fine. As it perfectly fits my limited budget I'll be getting one this saturday.
