Question:
I was just wondering about connecting a subwoofer (not done it yet, but judging by previous threads it sounds like a bit of a headache).
I have read that when using a subwoofer, the other speakers should be set to small. I want to know if this is the case if using floorstanders? I have Celestion F30's as fronts, which deliver quite a bit of bass, so wasn't sure if these should be set large or small?
Also, has anyone got any tips (or point me in the right direction) for setting the subwoofer up - in particular setting the crossover frequrency etc.
Cheers
I think if you set all your speakers to small you should set the subs crossover to max (150Mhz) which wiil let the sub handle all bass
Personally i have set mine between 50 - 60 Mhz and have my mains (floorstanders) to large and all others to small but i'm still tweaking to see which sounds best.
I also have my fronts set to large and the others to small.
I use the fronts for music and other things, as I want bass but not subwoofer bass.
The sub is set to 60mhz at the moment.
Details on the Celestion F30's.
Frequency Range ( ±2dB ) 55 Hz - 20 kHz
From this I would say set them as Large in the Amp menu and then set the sub crossover to around 55Hz. You may have to play around with setting slightly up or down to achieve the best results. I presume you have a five speaker set up (?) so what are the other speakers you are using ?
If they are all from the Celestron "F" range I would set them all to large. The higest frequency range being 80Hz for the center.
Its not meant as a "size" setting but a lower frequeny responce setting.
It just usually happens that larger speakers go lower in the Frequency range.
A speaker with frequency responce of 120Hz - 20 Khz would be classed as medium or small with Bass from the sub taking care of everything below this, so the Amp does not send and lower frequencys to the speakers. In your case the the lower frequencys can be sent to the speakers, because they can accept and produce the frequencys, and the sub will handle the bass below 55hz.
Hope this helps, and Good Luck.
Personally i'd set them at small. I have floorstanding Tannoys and they sound better set at small.Experiment to find what suits your application.
Cheers for that.
FYI the speakers are all celestion (F35c centre, F1 rears).
At the moment they're set with fronts on large and centre/ rears on small. Sounds like its a case of having a play around with all the settings until I get it right
If you are talking about the crossover on the sub, it should be left on the highest setting, or switched off if possible.
It is the amp that handles the bass management and the crossover frequency when using a line level connection to the sub.
If the amp has adjustable crossover frequencies then use that.
Oh, and in answer to original query, try both ways and see what sounds better. All speakers to small works best for me and I have B&W floorstanders.
I've got a Marantz sr4200 amp, but don't know if has adjustable crossover frequencies (and the manual 's about as easy to understand as ancient egyptian hyrogliphics).
Don't suppose anyone knows if this is available?

I don't think that adjustable crossovers were available on the 4200 or 5200 but were higher up the range on the 6200
Cheers for that.
Carrying on from this, could someone explain a couple of things to me
1) LFE, and LFE attenuation. WTF is it, and how is it best to set this?
2) How is the sub used in the different surround modes? - I know its employed in DD and DTS, but am I right in thinking it's not used in pro-logic 2?
3) Is the sub volume adjusted by both its own volume and the amp volume? - in which case the former is used to 'tie in' with the amp, and the latter used as a master volume? - or am I talking complete crap?
I would also like to know the above too:thumbs:
