Been after a Plasma for a while but costs have prohibited me.. but £2000 is in my budget (just)

Answers:

Good old Richer Sounds. They also have a Samsung 42" plasma for 2K and a sony lcd projector for £1K.
Shame that both prices are out of my budget (according to her who must be obeyed!).

I think the 2k richer sounds LG is an ex demo model 13 or 14. The newer 17 model is 2.5k.

i would so love one of these.

Check out the avforums for a mass debate on issues with the LG plasmas. I love mine, but it's not perfect. Still, I paid for the warranty, just to be on the safer side.

They are selling these in Curry's too. For £2999 you get the Plasma, the speaker set, the stand and some other bits and bobs IIRC, which if you work it out isn't much different to the RS price.
Regarding the set itself, this is the only plasma I have ever seen in the flesh and thus cannot speak comparatively in terms of quality, but when I saw it they were playing Monsters Inc on DVD and it was absolutely mind-blowing!
The clarity and detail were amazing and FAR surpassed the quality on both my Tosh 37" CRT and Tosh Projector - really was one of the most beautiful visual displays I had ever seen!
All I can say is that if the cheap ones look this good, how good do the more expensive ones look?

Everyone (well, a lot of people who are into AV stuff) says that monsters inc looks good on just about any display so it's not a good dvd to use when testing plasmas. Or something like that.

hmmm...good point. I suppose those crafty folk at Currys got something right then, because it *really* looked stunning...

They must have used something other than RF going through 9 splitters then... ;)

lol. yep I was quite impressed. I think someone from samsung themselves must have gone in and set it all up because they were just finishing it off when I left and he was showing the bloke @ curry's how to use it and demo it to customers.
Cannot emphasise just how stunning it looked though - for £2K i was amazed...

Answers:

Welshlad, go back and demo it for yourself but take a selection of DVDs and see how good it looks with your favourite films. I doubt it will look quite so stunning playing Se7en.

no, probably not. but they certainly got the effect they wanted with it.

Yea but it'll still look better thn any CRt/Rear Projection..

so... if you're going to be paying £1K+ for a decent 36" WS telly then the extra few hundred to get a 'cheep' plasma might be money well spent?
have to say that the ones i have seen in the local Curry's had a less than spectacular picture (had what looked like a dead line in the display, not exactly great presentation of the stock) but the sheer size and thinness of it made it a mouth watering proposition.
How much fine tuning/setting up can you realistically do on plasma displays though? I was assuming you could change brightness/contrast etc but that what i saw in the shop was a true representation of the quality i could expect - worse than my Panny WS.

Answers:

The prob with the high street setups is that they are out of the box setups.. no one has tuned them (not often anyway) so the quality could be worse than you expect..
I need one (due to space issues) a rear pro or big CRT are just toooo heavy and space inefficient..

Add my tuppance worth
The LG is not the absolute cutting edge in Plasma turms, but it makes every Rear Pro set That I have seen Look like a very poor relation -- it totally knocks spots off them
I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma (we Love it) but I paid a lot more for it than the LG is currently selling for. so any-one in the market for an affordable big screen setup
Go for it you wont regret it

I helped install an LG plasma a while back, and beware that they are very, very heavy. It is just about a 2 man lift and you need a hefty wall to hang it from....
The only DVD they had to try on it was Shrek, and since I watch DVDs either on my computer monitor, or my 14 inch TV I really can't comment on the quality...
I didn't read through the manual much, but the thing about it that annoyed me was that when watching standard TV (i.e. in 4:3) there are bright blue bars down either side. Hopefully you can change the colour of these to black, as I found them very distracting while trying to watch TV. You can zoom the picture to the full width of the display, but everyone develops fat-head syndrome...
...it does look nice even when turned off though...

i WAS LOOKING AT A FEW OF THESE SCREENS A WHILE BACK
SORRY CAPS ON now off
I think that you are makinga big mistake judging a PS through a DVD playing a computer generated movie like monsters inc or toy story etc etc. They will look great whatever.
Best way is to look at a tv signal or sky. John Lewis on oxford street have a batch all playing sky. You could really tell the difference between them. The pioneers stood out a lot. Unfortunately they are about twice the price of the cheapest.
When that type of quality PS reached 2g then I'm jumping in
I have seen a range of others by phillips and LG. My main issue has been a greyishness and graininess esp in dark areas. The best screens - black is black
these are just my opinions - oh and as you have guessed I don't actually own one!!!!!!

I have the LG14 model - and am chuffed to bits with it. Firstly, in "4:3" mode, the bars down either side are pale grey (not blue) - and they can't be changed - but who watches regular TV in 4:3 mode? I used to watch it on my CRT in 16:9 without any grievance and the same applies to this beauty... you soon get used to Pat Butcher being doubled in size!
With plasma you'll never get true black (at the moment), but it's not that much of an issue - trust me. Additionally, on black sources plasma's can show little definition - the more money you pay the better it will get, but again, the detail on blacks is lacking compared to a CRT.
If there is one piece of advice I can give that YOU SHOULD TAKE NOTE OF: go and demo it if you are considering buying! I absolutely cannot stress that enough - each Plasma differs from person to person (honest!), and if you're prepared to shell out £2/3K then you really should make sure you buy the right product for you - my other half considered the Samsung image better over the LG, I disagreed. I won.
For demo purposes you really should take a variety of sources. Obviously the likes of a Pixar disc are going to be leaps and bounds ahead of something restored from the original 80's film! It's an unfair comparision (and why the stores always dem with these discs).
For info, the LG10 model is now discontinued and you can pick this up (ex-dem) from RS for £2K - that's the panel and nothing else. The LG17 is the replacement and is up for £2.5K - again, panel only.
You can pick up the LG14 (by the way; the bugger weighs 8 stone!) from the usual High Street outlets as a package deal with speakers, tuner and desktop stand for £3K. You will likely also be able to get upto 2yr IFC. Alternatively, you can go somewhere like QED and pick up the same package for £2.5K (give or take), but you need the cash upfront or a flexible friend.
*Allegedly*, according to Baron Mcann (LG's distributors) and LG themselves, the LG14 is the same as the LG17, but a consumer model; both parties are currently spouting the same line - so one assumes it could well be true. The LG17 is reported to have a better contrast ratio, but if you believe the word then the LG14 will be the same... and I have to say I am well pleased with the image from my LG14.
In my humble opinion, Plasma is superb for playing/watching DVD's. It's the sole reason I bought mine (oh, and I did a deal with the other half when decorating the lounge!).
For analogue TV the picture is good; if a little odd watching the news in such large proportions... For digital (!) TV it can be hit and miss - you will find a lot of people who support this! Some channels are better than others; the digital broadcasters are pretty dire in their transmissions a lot of the time, but as long as Living TV can broadcast a decent signal for Will & Grace, I'm happy! :norty:
It's a great piece of kit, and if you decide to buy one I doubt you'll regret it - a highlight has to be being able to drop into conversation; "...plasma? Oh, yeah... got one of those"!!!
- and yes, it does look stunning - even when not in use!
HTH.

qed don't have the LG bundle anymore. It was available a few weeks ago for just a few days. I ordered one, they charged me and two weeks later they were emailing me saying it was on special order and they didn't know when it would be in. So I cancelled. If they hadn't charged me right away then I would have kept it on order but no way am I paying £2.5k for something when I don't know when it will arrive.

Answers:

QED have the bundle on & off; it'll appear again for sure.
If you keep an eye out, you'll get one straight away since they do take physical delivery of stock - but it sells sooooooo fast!

Answers:

I'll keep checking cause at around £2.5k it's a good deal but I don't like being charged for something when they aren't able to send it to me. If I see it again I'll probably order and then if they can't deliver in a couple of weeks, cancel it.
