How do I connect 5.1 Speakers to my PC
Question:

Lol everyone.
Hopefully this is in the right section, if not please move this to the computer section mods.
This might sound a bit of a silly question but here goes anyway.
"I brought a new PC last week and 5.1 speakers which I sourced seperately from the PC. The motherboard has an onboard sound card 6.1. I can only see 3 phono jacks at the back of the PC, Purple, green and blue.
Q. How do I connect the PC (3 x 3.5mm jacks to the back of the sub which powers the speakers. The sub has 3 rows of double phonos. I will need an adaptor or lead which has two audio phones for the sub and at the other end of the lead it will need a single 3.5mm jack.
I've been to PC world I can't find any leads that could possibly work.
Please someone must know what to do.

What MOBO is it? I would have thought that it would need some sort of input which plugs into the mobo and has a plate which screws into a spare PCI opening on the back of the case.
Surely there is some reference to this in the MOBO handbook. If not, visit the manufacturers website to see if there is anything on there.
Check with whoever you bought the PC from, maybe they just haven't installed the piece of kit you need and will be able to send you it.
I have an MSI mobo in a PC I built myself and it came with 3/4 additional connectors so I would doubt the PC supplier would send these if they didn't install them originally

It's a MSI MOBO. I brought the PC from Hong Kong a week and a bit ago so if there part missing I'll have to contact them directly.
From the hand book the MOBO just has the 3 std speaker 3.5mm jacks. I can't see any other input that connects to the PCI plates. I'll check tonight by opening the tower case up.
Thanks for the info and I'll visit there website later today.
When you bulit your own PC using the MSI MOBO did you need to use the 3/4 additional connectors?
I'm not great when it comes to PC's so sorry if I'm a bit slow.
I'll let you know what the model of the MOBO is.
Cheers

I have an audigy sound card so didn't use the onboard sound. Mine is an MSI KT3 ULTRA which has 5.1 onboard but you need to plug in the additional connector.

Answers:

o.k then mine certainly didn't come with an additional connector. All it came with was the manual, setup CD, warranty card and orginal packing.
Bugger as I brought the PC before I got the speakers. If I'd brought them from the same shop they would have tested the speakers making sure I had all the relevant bit. Oh well if I get no joy I can always flog the speakers on the forums.

you can probly change the mobo's connections, alot of the newer mobos only have 3 3.5mm jacks but what the jack does can be changed!
So you do need to find the mobo model and then goto msi's site and download the appropriate sound drivers.

Sounds good to me cbj110.
But I was still wandering whether I need any addtional connectors to fit in the PCI slot.
The rear of the amp/sub just has 3 sets of double std phono sockets. one for the front L & R, the middle for the centre & sub and the last for the rears L & R. The speakers just came with 3 pairs of the std red and white interconnectors.
Does that mean that I would need a similar set up running from the back of the PC i.e 3 sets of double phonos?
This is what the back of the sub/amp looks like

nope as each 3.5 mm jack carries 2 channels. so you will need 3.5mm to 2xphono leads but these are reasonably common.

AAARRR is starting to make sense now.
I went to PC world and described the same lead to them and they reckoned they don't exist unless you have on specially made up.
I'll try somewhere like maplins or lecktropacks e.t.c.
Cheers for all the info m8. I'll let you know the outcome after the week end.

Good old PC world.
They definitely exist, my PC speakers were supplied with a few for just this reason. You can also get an adapter that converts from one headphone jack to two phonos, but ready made leads are probably a better option.

Cheers neilalford. I've just had a look at keeneelectronics and they do the 3.5mm jack to 2 phono adapter for £3 each or the leads which have 2 phonos at one end and the single 3.5 jack at the other for £5 each.
Adding the additional costs of the leads and having to bring the sodding things back with me from Hong Kong and should have just ordered a Creative 6.1 speakers pack over the net here and saved all the argro.
