Question:
Thought I'd get round to hooking up my pioneer ondodgy box (and my tivo..) to my a/v receiver. My a/v is a Sony DB-925 or similar(!) - can't remember the exact model number.
I've connected the ondodgy box phono outs to the tv phono in on the amp and set the amp to AFD (auto format decode). But looking at the display on the amp it only shows stereo, and only the left and right speaker icons light up.
Am i right in thinking that when set to AFD the receiver should detect any TV progs encoded with DPL and automatically switch my receiver into the correct DPL mode ? - i.e. the left, right, centre and central rear icons should light and I should be able to hear surround sound. Cos this isn't happening!
Any suggestions as to what might be going wrong
The sony can't auto detect the signal from an analog source, only digital. HAving AFD won't work, you need to manually select 'normal surround' for analog pro logic sources (tv, video etc).
Well I never.
Thanks m8 - you've saved me an awful amount of head scratching/cable swapping time.
I was worried about manually putting the Sony into surround mode as it's got so many "simulated" surround modes....
yep, all those sounds modes are a knightmare. Most sound a bit naff anyway, I just leave it with the sound modes off :)
so I assume that if I manually put the amp into "normal surround" mode as you suggest and listen to a non-surround broadcast (e.g. the 6 o'clock news?) I should hear no sound coming from the rear speakers at all ?
the amp will probably try and decode it as pro logic, most likely get stuff on the 3 fronts, but not much from the rears.
With things that aren't meant to have rear channel sound I often get an odd kind of radio inteference noise at a low volume. Thankfully not loud enough to hear unless you put your ear to the speaker.
