Question:
Hi there i am new to this forum and i need help with my system, I have a Toshiba 28ws Dolby Digital 100hz TV and a Toshiba Tosh 2109 DVD player, As i understand the DVD only has Coaxial digi audio outputs, can some explain the difference between coax and opitcal firstly, also whats the best way to gor for the video output, scart, svhs or av leads, all your help will be very welcome.
 Welcome to the forums.
Your options for the video signal are (in descending quality):
1st) component (if both tv and dvd support it).
2nd) RGB (via SCART lead)
3rd) S- Video (via S-Video lead or SCART lead)
4th) composite (don't touch this with a barge pole)
The difference between RGB and S-Video is debatable (i personally prefer the more natural look of S-Video, but either are great).
With regard to audio, are you connecting the dvd player to an external amp, or just to the tv? If it's to the tv, what inputs are there on the back?
Experts will tell you that co-axial is marginally better than optical, but to be honest, most people would be hard pushed to tell the difference. :)
Cheers for the welcome
what does a component lead look like?
am i right in thinking that some scarts are composite and some rgb so how can i tell. is it the amount of pins?
The TV has coax and optical inputs, Is a coax cable just a standard single av lead?
A component lead looks like a phono lead x 3
All scarts have the same number of pins, it's just that some are not connected. If you don't want to spend too much, just get a fully wired Scart, and you will get RGB.
You can use a standard av lead as a coax, however, if you spend a few quid more, you can get a very good single cable. Beyondhifi.com are good, and if you do a search, you'll find other e-tailers recommended on this site.
Cheers thats great i think i will have this sorted now:D
