1.66:1 anamorphic DVDs on my WS set
Question:

This may seem a silly question from an old fool but here it goes.
When I watch a 1.66:1 anamorphic DVD on WS set it fills the screen but my little knowledge of aspect ratios suggests its should have black bars down the sides, across the bottom and top so I see the full image. I have a terrible feeling I am missing some of the picture. My DVD player is set for 16:9 for WS set and the WS Tv is in 16:9 mode.
Are my suspicions correct?
If my suspicions are correct why does the TV/DVD player zoom in to fill the screen?

Answers:

It can depend because aspect ratios on dvd packaging are more a general description than 100% correct.
For example, 2.35:1 might not be 2.35:1, it might be bigger or smaller but to write down all the individual aspect ratios which have ever been used on the back of dvd packaging would be time consuming and confuse the average punter.

Cheers jimmyboy, Ive just been playing about with the zoom function on my toshiba sd220 and I can zoom out and see the whole frame. 1.66:1 Django was definatly zoomed in to fill the whole screen on my set up and it cut Djangos head off in the last few seconds off the film, I zoomed out and his head is not chopped off.

Most TVs overscan, this tends to hide the small side bars on 1.66:1 movies.
