Question:
Wanted to buy a DVD recorder here in the states. Not a computer drive but a TV top kind. My question what brand and model do you recomend and will i be able to backup some of my VHS collection onto DVD's? I am not worried about quality loss as much as I am worried about buying a movie a second time. So can I copy from VHS to DVD and can I record shows off TV and easily edit out the commercials?
Thanks so much. I am new here so this may seem like a beginer question!
I would advise against buying a set top recorder in the USA as the tuner will be NTSC
Meaning you wont be able to record a UK Pal TV signal with it
(Presuming that you are UK based)
Are you based in the US? If so then look at the Panasonic's or Philips that Best Buy sell. You can then try one for 30 days and return if it doesn't meet your needs. If you live in the UK then don't get one from the US as it will be NTSC only as said by mr procter.
As for transferring VHS to DVD, you will be able to do any home movies etc but commercial stuff is copy-protected with Macrovision usually so you will not be able to transfer it easily.
I've got the Philips 880 and it records both NTSC and PAL sources, so why do you want a US machine? Cost?

The DVD set top recorders will all write NTSC/PAL files, what they wont do is record BOTH ntsc/pal TV signals meaning record a live broadcast
as far as I know no DVD Recorder as of yet has a twin Pal/NTSC tuner
I had a quick look on Philips website and can see nothing about twin TV tuners, can you send me a link to this please
Thanks for the great responses. I Live in the United States, and have never even been to the UK :) Someday I hope to visit though. Without my DVD recorder of course :)
So there are copyright protections to contend with if I want to copy my already purchased VHS tapes... That does not seem fair as it leaves no way to backup a legally owned product.
I use my Philips 880 to record an NTSC satellite feed live from the US a couple of times each week. Surely that's all you need it to do isn't it? Also fine at recording PAL material from Sky Digital. What it won't do is allow both PAL and NTSC material on the same disc, but individual discs works just fine.

Is that a European only recorder? I only see the 985 for sale here. I wouldn't mind getting one if it could record both PAL and NTSC. Does it have a built in tuner for recording off terestrial TV? This could be a difference ans they have a different style of tuner here for analogue cable feeds.
Pretty sure the Philips 880 (UK model) will only record PAL terrestrial signals, but for recording via Scart or S-Video, it will record NTSC signals perfectly. I usually take the MSNBC/NBC satellite feed from the Telstar 12 satellite and record West Wing, Friends, etc. from a DVB receiver directly into the Philips machine. I'll be taping the latest West Wing season 4 episode tonight in fact. :)
Origionally I was interested in putting my VHS tapes on DVD but that doesn't even sound feasable at this point. Will all the copyright ******** I am not even going to deal with it. I am just out on the VHS tapes I already own. I have over 300 DVD's at this point, I might as well just buy the DVD's of what I have on VHS. I think I will still go ahead and buy a DVD burner to tape crap off TV like south park episodes etc. Do these DVD burners have a way to cut out commercials and edit them out or is that a whole nother pain in the arse?
Thanks so much for all the responses.
By the way, I would be recording right off of regular cable television here in the united states. I dont have satelite tv.
