Sound Pressure Level Meter
Question:

Does anyone know where I could go to get one of these? Preferably on the net.

Try here http://www.cornwallelectronics.co.uk/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=884&category_id=90c9cf5c8dfa5c41f82d94240db86c82
They also do a Digital meter but it's a lot more expensive. If you do a search for level meter it will find them both.

I got mine from www.cornwallelectronics.co.uk. Fast and efficient service. IIRC delivery was free. They just needed to phone me up to confirm credit card details for security reasons and the meter was in the post.
Search for 'meter' on the main page and amongst other things, you'll see the analogue and digital versions for £25 and £40 respectively.
EDIT - Doh, pipped to the post

I ordered an analogue meter with Cornwall on Friday night and was rung on Saturday morning to confirm CC details and it's already in the post. Very efficient service.

How much more difficult is it to use an analogue meter compared to a digital metre. Also, will it make a huge amount of improvement (I currently have all my speakers at the same volume.)
Thanks

Analogue meters are easy to use (I have an old radio shack one.) The difference to the sound stage can be very pronounced if you aren't sitting equidistant from all of the speakers (or the pairs.) If you are pretty central in the soundstgae already then you might not notice much difference.

I bought an alalogue meter from cornwall electronics, fantastic service. Ordered friday before christmas, turned up on the monday (after a phone call to confirm cc details). Supa company, well impressed.
As to ease of use I think analogue ones are probably easier, theres not a lot in it. Thought I'd set my system up well by ear, I was waaaaaaay of. Much better for it now.

Can you use one of these to set the sub up?
I tried setting my system up with a borrowed one, but the sub seems so much quieter than the other speakers at a reasonable level.
I wondered if it was supposed to be at the same dB level?
Thanks,

The SPL meter doesnt acuratly measure low frequency sound.
It doesnt actualy acuratly measure many frequencies, as most of us test with white noise (or wideband) it should give a good average reading for main full spectrum speakers.
Unfortunatly Subs arnt full spectrum and only do a certain frequency range.
Cant find a web page with the right info but heres a PDF with the required adjustments if your using known frequency test tones.
http://www.rivesaudio.com/files/Spl.pdf
You can find test tones on the internet if you cant generate them yourself. (I havnt done this myself as my dvd dont like cdr's).
