Question:
OK, I know this must be simple but what is the procedure for actually shutting a TiVo down prior to transit? There's no off switch I can see and the menu reset just restarts. How do you actually gracefully shut the thing down?
You just switch it off at the mains, or, as in my case, pull the plug!
It's clever enough to recover from this. I'd avoid doing it when it's recording though!

It's ALWAYS recording!
Switching it off at the main will be fine, it's designed to do this.
Yeeuch. Very UN-unixy for a 'nix system. :)
The live TV recording buffer must be setup in some clever way that allows sudden power outage to not corrupt the main filesystem. A separate scratch partition that gets reset on powerup would be my guess.
You could of course key in a random channel, then key it in again to get the blue "TiVo can't display Live TV.." screen, then press the standby button on the TiVo remote. This is about as off as TiVo get's without the plug being pulled :noid:
The magical double post pixie strikes again!
Switched off from the mains a few times, and the tivo's fine after that.
In fact, it's what i do when my tivo decides to act a bit funny sometimes.
Had a (toaster enforced) power failure today - Tivo came back automagically without a problem (unlike the washing machine - I swear it's running Windows..)
LOL@Dave h-j :D
Can't remember since the last time I did it, but isn't there a system shutdown option on one of the System menus?
If not, just select the restart, and unplug the sucker just before it reboots.
