Don't forget to add cables + stands to your budget.
Would reccomend the Marantz SR4200 amp as you can find it for as little as £199 - which is an excellent bargain for a very capable amp and will help you get more from your cash.

Answers:

Amp choice will likely come down to a Marantz, Denon or Yammy for under £300.
For speakers I would have a look at www.Homecinemaheaven.com (Justin's site) - can get the Tannoy FX5.1 or MS Premiere speakers (Tannoy would be just under £300, MS nearer £400).
Not really up on DVD players at the mo...
Easily get an excellent system for under a grand though...

jdncl,
Would you be interested in a Yamaha DSP-AX620 (http://www.smr-group.co.uk/components/dsp-ax620.html) plus a TEAC LS5.1u (http://www.son-video.com/Rayons/HomeCinema/EnceintesAV/Teac511.html) speaker package (centre, matched main pair, rear dipoles plus an active subwoofer). You can have the lot for £320 delivered. A saving of £400-odd quid from original rrps. Leaves you £680 for a DVD player...
Mike.
P.S. Not sure of the forum position on me offering outside the classifieds but I'll go check.

Flimbers set up would be great value for money. The teac set is actually very good.
