At the moment, we have the standard analogue ntl home cable package (non digital)
My mum and dad want to know if we plug in a digital adaptor to the current ntl cable (before it goes into the analoguedecoder) will it work? Or will we have to go for a loft aerial for example?

I think you'll need a loft aerial to pick up Freeview. NTL will only be broadcasting their signal down the cable wires.
Some of the Freeview channels (definately the BBC's for example) are also available via cable, but I don't think you'll be able to get all of them unless you get an aerial and an adapter.
You definatley have to use a normal ariel.
