Hoya filter and Panasonic AE100? Two Thumbs up...
Question:

Had an eventful day sorting out my system... Tannoy FX5.1 arrived today (thanks Justin) so could finally set up my Yammy amp.
My Hoya filter also popped through the post from Jessops.com. Only ordered it last week (the site had said around a 5-6 week wait).
Had read the reviews over at avforums and decided to give it a go. For £20 it really is a great upgrade - colours feel richer and the picture seems somehow less flat. Could see the difference straight away by holding the filter over half the picture...
Would recommend that everyone gets one and least give it a try. Holds in place quite easily with some masking tape.
Am using my Panny with the Limit 9900SE from Richers and am very impressed - even more so now. Only projecting onto a white wall and even with a 150 inch picture gives fantastic results.
Give it a try...
John

is there a direct link for it on the jessops site... presumeably a particular ring size too?

This is Shockabuku (from the AVforums excellent and helpful review, pic above came from a link in this)
"Finally got a hold of the Hoya FL-D (not HMC) filter for the Panny last Friday & have been playing around with it over the weekend. Please note that the HMC is *not* available in the UK. You can, of course, order it from the USA, but after seeing the standard filter in action, I won't bother getting the HMC.
BTW, I spent ages last night taking pictures & they all came out terribly. I got the same banding on the photos as Li On did when he first tried. Weird. They really don't do the pq any justice, but I'd be happy to chuck them on my website if anyone's interested.
Here are some initial thoughts on the FL-D...
1. It definitely doesn't *quite* fit the into the thread of the Panny. I've used electrical tape to keep it in place as it doesn't tend to leave goo behind when removed. Very easy to secure though, so my advice is go for the 55m filter & don't worry. Here's a picture of the filter in place. Oh, and here's a picture of the case if you're interested (you never know!)
2. Brightness. Yes, it cuts a little out, but in my book this is a .good thing! In my (just about) blacked-out room, I have found the Panny to be rather bright, but this filte knocks just a little of that off. Suits me fine.
3. My two bugbears with the Panny were the contrast & the green levels. Well, the green levels are no longer a problem. This filter does exactly what it says on the tin...kills all known greens dead. Well, ok, not quite, but it tones them down to how the Panny *should* have been in the first place (along with a little bit of adjustment on the projector itself). I've beefed up the red a little, & decreased the blue a couple of points & colours look very balanced to my eyes now.
4. Contrast is better. It's still not approaching CRT (obviously), but with the brightness turned down a few notches on the pj, and contrast beefed up a bit, we're talking much closer to a decent DLP now. I did get quite distracted by the grey bits that I knew should have been black, but now less so. They're still grey, but a noticeably darker grey.
5. I expect that many people will be using Li On's settings that he came up with after some excellent work with the Panny & Hoya FL-D HMC filter. Well, I would say that they're good to use as a starting point, but of course you need to adjust them to suit your own environment/screen/eyes. I needed to up the red a little from his recommendation, and I'm not too sure about using the "Dynamic" setting on the pj. I keep switching between that & "Natural", & I reckon Natural wins...Dynamic tends to make the whites brighter than Daz white....which is too bloomin white for me. I do like the increased contrast & "Zap" (scientific term) the picture get's with Dynamic though, so I'm fiddling about with settings to try & reach a compromise.
My conclusion is....if you have a Panasonic PT-AE100E....get this filter! The improvement in pq for £20.99 makes it a no-brainer. If you can find one, of course. Jessops had two in the country apparently. Now they have one"

Can you tell me what size I need for the panny and whether you need any other adaptor to fit it on? I've just had the 55mm version delivered but can't manage to be able to screw it on!

Answers:

Just use masking tape... does the job fine and doesn't look as bad as you would think

Well, I took the plunge - ( well for £16 I had too really ) and the filter now is attatched to my AE100
I used the THX setup on R1 Attack of Clones for the setup - and have my player connected via component output.
I have found that I did not need to alter the color settings, but both Contrast and Brightness settings had to be lowered by about 5 each. Does this sound about right ?
Also - should I just stick with normal color and norma settings ? or should I have it in Cinema mode or anything ?
Thanks in advance !

I got one but 58mm, I think the 55mm must be the VERY smallest you could go, it's a bit tight.
You can also get filter holders like the Cokin type or similar from Jessops, this holder then simply "hangs" over the lens. My ones got an arch in it and it sits perfect over the lens, obviously makes it easy to remove etc etc. No need for tape or anything that will likely leave residue on your precious lens. Also the thread on the Hoya is quite sharp and will easily scratch the chrome finish of the lens assembly, so it is probably best overall to hang the filter as I said.
As for the result ? Well I just recently got myself a SD900E and this Filter, and I can tell you the picture is a revelation.

I bought one of these filters from the U.S. (The HMC variety) and popped it onto my PJ. But, what I hadn't realised is that it is not possible to adjust the colour balance using the component input, just the RGB one. So it just makes the whites pink which is not much use :( Is there a way of adjusting the balance using component input? I may end up selling the filter if not.

Answers:

It does make a difference - and a noticable one
£16 for such an improvement is a bargain
Just need to be sure my calibration is correct - anyone care to share there thoughts ?

powlest: I do actually have one that I want to sell. I had a 55mm version delivered and thought I'd ordered the wrong one so went to the local camera shop and bought the 58mm version. Now I have the 55 and 58mm versions and obviously only need the one. Think I paid 22.99 for the 58mm version so I'm willing to sell it at that price so that I only loose out on the postage.
LMK :)

Just watched 8 mile using the filter attatched the the front of my AE100 and it really does seem to have made a difference.
For £16 give or take its a real bargain - well worth the money
Found that with another calibration that my contrast is now set at +16 ( little more than before ) brightness at -4 ( much lower, previous at around +5 ) and color is set at +4
I now have it set in Cinema mode ( although not sure what difference this makes )

Bought one of these filters off the avforums last week. Configured it up last night and first impressions are pretty favourable. I have to say that I think I had it looking pretty good already but this does add a little more to the contrast and the overall cinematic feel of the image.
One other thing to add is that I've also bought the AVIA Home Cinema config disc, and this is as good an upgrade as the hoya filter. Combine the two and you have a very nice image indeed.
Can't believe you can get AE100's for £700 now!!! Total bargain.....bought mine about 8 months ago for £1300. Still the best Homecinema cash I've spent
