Question:
An email which was sent to me from a friend had this attached to the bottom of it...
I thought some of you here might appreciate it.

CABLE INFORMATION
Check any good handbook of physical constants. Silver has much lower
resistivity than copper, and in fact has the lowest resistivity at room
temperature of anything which is solid at room temperature and thus
suitable for making wires.
However the practical solution is to use thicker copper wire. Still
if you believe in the tweaky nature of things like skin effect, you
would probably be attracted by thin silver over copper.
For the scoop on gold. Gold in fact is not a very great conductor. Its
virtue is as a plating for contacts (and so connectors) because it doesn't
develop an oxide layer which can degrade the connection and also gold is
relatively soft therefore mates well with other metals. Since resistance
decreases with cross-sectional area, and decreases with thinness, a really
thin layer of gold on the relatively large contact area doesn't hurt
things.
Of course, not to be overlooked is the fact that copper is reddish,
and so will tend to brighten or warm up the sound; while silver, being
white, will tend towards a neutral presentation, which can be tweaked
towards brightness by selective use of gold-plated plugs and sockets.
If the above paragraph is delectable to you, you should also remember
to take care that your signal sources are racked above your amp, and
that the amp is racked higher than the speakers, so that the electrons
don't have to struggle uphill to get the sound out. You'd be amazed at
the difference that can make. Also, both speakers should be off to the
same side of the amp, so that the speaker cables are subject to the same
coriolis forces owing to the earth's rotation; failure to observe this
can result in truly nasty phase shifts.
lol!
Got me hook line and sinker'till the second paragraph! I need to get a life!:)
:)
Did that come out of a Russ Andrews catalogue? The home of £500 mains splitters and £12000 speaker cables!
