The Chroma Bug
Question:

Hello All,
Many a link on this forum has mentioned various diffrent ways to get a picture on a moniter, from an ariel lead to progressive scan. I will soon be purchasing a new TV and a new DVD player. My first choices would be a Toshiba 36ZD26P television and a Denon DVD 2800mkII. I choose the Denon DVD as I already own a Denon AVR3802 receiver. But since I have spoken about these I have heard about the "Chroma Bug"?
Then the Phillips DVD 963SA and Pioneer 747 pops up as a progressive enabled player and I have even thought about stretching to an Arcam DV88+. I would also want good CD playback. So can you answer my questions?
What is the "Chroma bug"? (what does it affect?)
What players does it affect and why don't reviews mention it ?
Thanks

i have a tosh 510 connected to my panasonic projector and although my player is meant to have the chroma bug i dont notice it

Thanks Chas.
How big is your screen?
If you cannot notice it on a projected picture who will ?

Answers:

its 8 ft wide and i sit about 12 ft back from it.
I think people who notice stuff like the chroma bug, edge enhancement are a bit anal  and are more interested in picking out problems rather than enjoying the movie, i am just happy to watch a movie on a big screen and not worry about minor imperfections.

I noticed this problem on the very first DVD I ever bought, however I was watching on a pc plugged into a 10 year old TV via composite. I didn't know what it was called but set about buying a better TV and stand alone player, using improved connection methods (RGB) and resisting the temptation to sit 6 inches away from the screen! ;) I have also got a Panasonic player and a Matsa****a DVD-R/RAM drive in my pc so perhaps I have eliminated the problem unconsciously by selecting products that looked good to me in my price bracket.

I beg to differ - I have a comparitively tiny screen (28"), and the chroma bug is VERY noticeable on pure reds with my Samsung 709 to the point of being distracting. Hell, it's like watching a bunch of red Lego bricks!

Answers:

It's worse on saturated reds, especially animated titles like Toy Story.
