Colour/B&W problems
Question:

Hi there.
I have an LG3200 player that I have enabled to be a multi-region player. I have found a website for a place in Hong Kong that sells some good, cheap DVD's. I have bought a couple of DVD's from them. The most recent one, Dog Soldiers, will not play in colour, only black and white. The previous DVD, O Brother Where Art Thou plays just fine. Also, the Dog Soldiers disc plays fine on my PC.
Anyone else had problems like this? The discs are Region 3, and I've tried setting the player to both Region 3 and Region 0. Is the fact that the one that works is DVD5 and the one that doesn't is DVD9 of any relavance?
Any help will be gratefully recieved.

I think you'll find that the one you're having problems with is NTSC and that your TV is not NTSC compatible.
I had the same problem till I configured my DVD player to output RGB format, which my TV accepts.
If you have RGB options on your TV/DVD player, try this. If the options are enabled and there's no joy, it may be that you don't have a fully wired SCART lead.
Alternatively your player may have a convert to PAL option on the output picture. Setting this should solve the problem too.
Hope this all makes some sense.
Andy
PS Australia's pretty cheap for DVDs and they're PAL.

Cheers for the help. However, the O Brother DVD is NTSC as well, and that plays just fine. I couldn't find anything to change the output format in any of the menus either.
I'll check out some Aussie sites - mind you, I paid £5.94 for O Brother and £7.07 for Dog Soldiers, and that is including delivery.

What retailer was that from?

They don't have a big selection of Western stuff, but what they have is usually cheap. Also, if you are into Jackie Chan, Jet Li etc, they have a lot of them.

Have you got your player set to output NTSC as pure NTSC, PAL60 or PAL?
My old player (LG3350e) had all these options.
If your's does as well, then set it to output NTSC as PAL60 or PAL and see if this helps.

Thanks for all your help, it's fixed now!
I found the manual for the player, and it showed that on the back of the player, there is a switch, the TV System Select switch. It has 3 positions:
PAL - Connect to a PAL Tv and it will play NTSC/PAL discs
NTSC - Connect to an NTSC TV to play NTSC discs
AUTO - Connect to a MULTI system TV to paly NTSC/PAL discs
It was set to MULTI, so I reset it to PAL and it worked - I think this was what drooper was telling me to do, but I thought it was done on the menus, I didn't realise there was a switch on the back.
So, all's well, etc. Oh, and Dog Soldiers, for a cheap, low budget film, was quite good. Certainly worth £7.
