DVD sound advice please
Question:

Just purchased a Panasonic RV32 DVD which I connected to the Av2 on my Panasonic TV. I have a VCR & Sky digibox on Av1. I notice however that the sound setting for the DVD is a lot lower than the analogue or sky & vcr channels on Av1(both sky & Vcr also panasonic). Is this a fault or do DVDs have lower settings? Given that all equipment is from Panasonic it seems strange. Please advise?

DVDs take advantage of the lower noise floor of digital by having a larger dynamic range, ie, volume difference betwen loads bits and quite bits. So basically, yes it is completely normal to have to turn the volume up for DVDs.

Answers:

Yeah, before i started using a seperate speaker set, I always had to turn up the vol.

I don't know if it'll make any difference but have you tried putting the DVD player into AV1 and the VCR/SKY into AV2? I thought that a VCR had to be plugged into the AV2 socket (for Q link to work). There doesn't seem to be much difference in quality of Sky when plugged into AV2 aswell. I find that the DVD player on AV1 on it's own gives a better picture quality as it's RGB enabled. Don't know about the sound bit as I have my DVD player hooked up to an amp rather than through my telly.

That won't make any difference. However, if the DVD has a DD 2.0 track, use that for listening through the TV and the volume will be more normal.
