Any tv repair people out there?
Question:

The reason I ask, is I have a Goodmans 24" tv which is on the blink. It's around 6 years old. The problem is, it turns on and you get a picture for a few minutes, then it goes black. You can still hear the sound, and after 20min-40mins, the picture will come back for a few minutes.
Is it worth getting it repaired?, or is this going to be an expensive problem?.

New TV's now are cheap so possibly buy a new one?

A replacement tv of the same spec will be around £150-£200. Really I need to know if the part which is likely to be causing this, will cost shed loads or not.

Could be a dry joint. When the picture goes of have you tried knocking the set to see if it comes back, if it does this indicates that there is a dry joint or bad connection on the set. Otherwise there could be a thermal problem with a component and that would need replacing, could be costly.

I have a Goodmans widescreen 28inch and it went a bit tits up not long ago, and prompty had an engineer out to repair it.
Luckily it was a simple job and so its now back up and running without any trouble. However it seems goodmans tvs are very prone to going wrong sooner rather than later, and have found lots of people who claim to be having similar trouble with their sets within a year of purchasing, so i would advise an upgrade to possibly a different make, unless you don't mind the risk and repair bill. As goodmans are a bargain make, they are quite cheap to repair thankfully but after finding so many people having to call out repairmen, it's made me decide to stay away from goodmans from here on in if i can help it. My opinion as if it wasnt clear already ;) is change it if you have the money to spare, preferably a different make but ultimatley its your choice, i guess we can't expect alot from goodmans since they really do have some good bargains about but just don't expect great workmanship.
The cost of the part for the repair was very cheap something like £7 for the part, i think the cost of him actually doing the job cost more infact, and the problem was the picture went black and i lost sound, similar problem to yours i think, i forget, but i've since spotted the tv doing odd things on occasion so am a little worried but i'll see what happens.
(one last thing, the repairman i had come out from comet was a slight letdown in that he took half the screws with him when he fixed the tv so had to ask for them back, which he then pretty much complained about saying it was "picky" of us to want them returned - just incase you bought yours from comet, thought it might come in handy)

Ater testing the tv last night, I found that if I smack it a few times, the picture re-appears for a while. I assume from what has been said, that's it's a loose connection or dry joint and won't be expensive to repair?.
