Matsui is a pureflat screen set, will that not give it the edge in pic quality ?

Answers:

No. It's a Matsui.
In all honesty the picture quality will dissapoint with Matsui and as a bedroom TV and assuming you are going to concentrate on DVD's and other "external" sources ie. Games machines, mabye Sky in due course? - you will want a TV that produces vibrancy and contrast. Toshiba will offer that together with a very good RGB image and quality NTSC pictures.
Head down to a Dixons showroom and have a good nose. On a weekday even get the spotty oiks to hook up a DVD player and judge for yourself.

Seriously mate, theres no such thing as cost cutting on a widescreen set.
Dig as deep as you can.
I wouldnt touch a no brand with a 50 foot pole either, flat screen or otherwise.

copied and pasted from my other thread !!!
I ordered the Toshiba 28'' Widescreen TV 28W23B (Silver) from tesco.com for £319.
A mate has a Bush 28" Widescreen TV. (Paid £229).
Upon reciving mine, its IDENTICAL to the bush tv.
Same case, same software on it, same remote, instructions etc.
Only difference is, mine is Toshiba branded.
Lucky I got it from Tesco.com as one phone call, and they have offered to take it back. (plus the remote control did not work, and its now £299 on the website...)
I think I might just go to tesco tommorow and buy a bush for £229 ! and stick a toshiba badge on it !!!!
I am not a name snob, but I was told, bush is poor, get the toshiba, you pay for what you get. . . . . If my mate did not have the bush, I would be none in the wiser.

Identical case, identical look, identical menus, identical remote, identical instructions. (replacing toshiba with bush), identical sound bug.

Just by chance I posted yesterday in the general forum about Bosch doing the same with washing machines made by White Knight!!
A £270 washing machine made in Spain with a Bosch badge becomes £350 !!! Rip-Off Britain? Rip-Off Europe!

What about the tube and many other components. I'm sure the bush would use lower quality components to the Toshiba model - otherwise why would people notice the difference in reliability\picture quality etc.

There's obviously a question that needs answering here!
plus I went to Ikea the other day and thought - "jeez that's the 28" flatscreen TV I'm just about to take delivery of, in fact there were 20 of them being used in the displays must have cost a bomb!!!"
Then of course I realised they were just the shells - if Ikea can get hold of them...who's to say !!!!

No store that sells toshiba sells bush. I can get my digital camera to send snaps off them both if anybody wants to see them.
Bit more research has found that Samsung make all the cheap low end TVs for Toshiba !
Its all in a name ! Toshiba is a good name, hence the cheap tv gets a good report (its still 400 at some places)

What about screen modes.
Was the Tosh able to zoom the picture in a little at a time ?.
Also was it able to raise and lower the picture ?.

Its the same, the tosh does not have a zoom mode. (neither does the bush unless its hide)
Same 4 screen options, auto, cne, 16:9 and 4:3 (also auto)
Only difference between the bush and the tosh is the name on it.
I like the set, but the duff remote control and the price drop means its going back, think I may order another one for 299 if I can not source the same bush.

Those specs sound like the sort of thing you get with a sub £250 WS set. Without the option to zoom and increase and decrease screen size the TV is pretty much useless.

This tosh set retails for up to 400 still !!! Nice pic on it tho.
How many sets give the option to zoom in and increase and decrease screen size ? It does have a zoom, but its abit pointless IMO
My 3 year old 32" Widescreen sony does not do that.

I don't think Sony's have a zoom so it might depend on the modal.
It's vital though because WS sets have a horrid habbit of over scanning the picture and if ever you come to watch a film with subtitles they can be cropped off at the bottom of the screen making a film unwatchable.

Answers:

the tosh should have subtitle zoom, along with superlive, zoom, cinema and 4:3. at least thats what my mother's has.
My £258 LG also has a subtitle zoom function
