Can somebody shed some light on this.....
Question:

ok this might sound like a stoopid question BUT.... recently i have been buying region 1 dvd's to play on my multi-region (bush2011) player, i have noticed that all of my region 1 discs are sort of jumpy i.e. when the camera pans across it's not a smooth pan, it sort of flicks across. This is kinda hard to explain with my minimal dvd knowledge but it's startin to bug me and i just wondered if anybody else experienced this kind of thing. Im using a scart lead to connect my player direct to the tv. ( i've also used my region 1 discs on my mothers player and the same thing happens) any ideas guys

This may well be an NTSC-PAL conversion issue.
NTSC disks have a higher frame rate than PAL, and a different screen resolution.
The NTSC-PAL screen resolution conversion can either be done in you DVD player (by setting it to output PAL 60), or left to your TV to do, by setting the output to NTSC. The only place the frame rate can be sorted out is in the TV (unless your DVD player can output NTSC into PAL-50 which yours can't )
The flickering of the pan is a combination of these.
I think it really comes down to the quality (and therefore price) of the components that you use to perform these conversions as to how good they are.
Anyone with an expensive setup care to comment ?

It's a "feature" of the conversion from film to NTSC, film is 24 frames per second, NTSC is 30, so in the conversion some frames are shown for twice as long as others to get the frames rates right which causes this jerkiness.

Its called 3:2 pulldown and as Neilalford says 1/4 frames are basicaly shown twice as long to 'fill in the gaps' so it looks jerkey.
PAL is 50/25 fps so all that is done with this is show 25fps of 24 fps material so it is actualy sped up by 4%.
PAL films are a few minuts quicker than NTSC. This often efects the sound aswell (4% higher in pitch) unless they've taked the trouble to pitch shift it like Pink floyds the wall.
