Question:
Basically I have a Pioneer VCX300 amp with a Pioneer 350 DVD player stacked on it on one of the shelves below my TV.
It runs absolutely fine, however at one point for whilst watching Star Wars II, there was sort of a change of scene and it was quite blocky - like not decoded properly, and I rewound it and played it again and it was fine.
After a quick check all the leads were plugged in, I pulled the DVD player out and the top of the amp was REALLY hot, in fact it was "uncomfortable" to touch for more than a few secs (and hence I didn't!!).
So I was think this really can't be that good for it. It does say to allow it space, but ALL the photos of this amp have it with the matching slimline DVD player on top - so surely it should be expected to be fine.
Has anyone else with this amp/combo found this too? Any suggestions - don't really want to fry the equipment (but I don't have the space to put them seperately, plus they look v cool together which was part the reason of getting them)?
never put anything on top of your amp, even if the instructions say you can, i have a pioneer 350 and a vsx c100, the instructions say u can put a 350 or 454 on top of the amp, but when i did the amp overheated....which also made the dvd player overheat too :brickwall
Placing a player on top of an amp contributed to the death of my player, despite there being no damage to the amp.
It is not unusual to see promotional material where the equipment is stacked in a way the documentation says is unwise!
General rule of thumb, 2 inches clearance above any comonent that generates a lot of heat, vented or not!
The hottest item (usually the amp) should be on the top!
The pictures in the press may have the dvd on top but I expect if something overheats in the amp Pioneer will say you haven't given it enough ventilation.
I built myself a custom cabinet to keep my Denon A1 amp & A1 dvd in and fitted a small quite blower in the back the amount of hot air it removes is scary!
I would suggest you raise the dvd player up on little blocks of wood to give the amp more room.
Ok - well looks like I'll either
- raise the dvd player using blocks to give a couple inches clearance, though that may look silly
- or do you think the dvd player would be okay supporting the weight of the amp, or would heat on the underside of the amp still cause problems?
(Thanks alot for answering quickly btw to all!)
Its fine to put the amp on top of the dvd player though, right? :noid:
the amp should be ok on top of the dvd player although the amp is pretty heavy so check it after a few days for warping the top of the player
top of a 350 is cool and bottom of the vsx 300 should be pretty cool, it takes air in through the bottom and sides

If the amp weighs more than a couple of kg I would be a little worried about it!
Isn't your amp quite small and light though?
Small, yes its a slimline - but weighs about 5 kgs
I reckon 5Kg's is fine. Pioneer must have tried it before they released it.
Like Hammie says try it for a few days. But keep an eye on it.
I would only start to worry if you have higher end stuff which usually weighs more. My dvd weighs 19Kg and the amp is 30Kg's!

WOT  he must need a crane to move that stuff around!
Keep my amp on a separate shelf with nothing near it and plenty of ventilation.......same with my digibox.
I have my amp under my player but there is plenty of space between the two.
I use a cheap metal hi fi rack.

because its a slimline amp, theres simply not enough inside to have the usual convection heatsinks, hence the small fan.
To be honest it needs to be in an area with plenty of ventilation, you`ll be fine to put it on top of the DVD - they are able to take much more then 5kg in weight:) make sure the stands not shoved right up against the wall also, so that theres a good 6 inch or so clearance behine the amp and cables - it all helps:)
Cheers
