Question:
I have these along with a Marantz 4200 and a Pioneer 350 player.
When watching a film (most dvd's) the speech seems to be very low, sometimes I have to turn the centre channel up to +10 (loudest).
I have my centre and rears set to 'small' and the fronts set to large, (no sub) - is this correct?
Also, when watching LOTR EE, at the beginning the amp kept showing the message "protected" which was flashing on the display and then proceded to turn itself off. This happened several times, but just stopped after 10 mins or so and has been fine since ?!?
Any ideas?
90% of speech come from the centre speaker, you don't say what you are using as a centre. If you don't have one at all then the centre speaker should be set to 'nonef' not 'small'.
Small only redirects the bass to the main speakers, none will redirect all centre sound to the mains.

Hi, sorry, I'm using the M72 cinema pack - so the centre is the M7C1i
Hmm, I used to use the m7c1 with my m74's it was definately the weakest link :(
Unless they've improved the 'i' one a lot it could well still be a bit awful :|
I also had mine boosted by a lot to try and get some life out of it compared to the fronts. Does your amp have a setting to set the main fronts to -10dB attenuation, as this will give you effectively up to a 20dB boost on the centres (and the surrounds which you may need to turn down :) ).
Always worth using the THX setup option thats on some DVDs or the test tones built into the amp to get all the volumes right.
Altho with the m7c1 volumes are about the only thing that will match up :(
I eventually repaced my m7c1 with the m7c2 which is hugely superior, buts costs about £120 :(

gothmog,
I also have the M74 with the M7C2 centre but what are you using for the rears?
I'am thinking of getting of geting the M70 to hang off the wall.
What do you think?

I have the same, and whilst the M7C1 is certainly weaker than the M74's, I certainly do not need to boost mine by 10Db, infact it's actually at -2Db.
Mission recommend you set the M72s and the centre to small, particularly if you have a sub. I've got the same setup (including the 4200) and it's absolutley fine.
Have you tried setting the fronts to small?
Oh and one other thing, check the centre is in phase with the fronts!

How do I check if it's in phase?
It was an old film (Omen Trilogy) that I had to turn it up to 10 on. But just generally it seems low on the speech.
What settings do you have your speakers on coolhand?
I have rears at + 4, fronts at 0 or +2 and centre at +4 -> +8 usually.
