Do DVD discs deteriorate?
Question:

Id always heard that dvd discs wont deteriorate over time like videotapes do but the other day someone said its just been discovered they only have a limited shelf life of 4-5 years before they start to waste away!
I dont want to find out Ive spent a good many hundred pounds on future beermats!
Can anyone verify this?

Good question, I know I read somewhere that over time dvd-r's start to deteriorate, the cheaper jobbies in something like 5 or 6 years. But only having my writer for 6 months or so I couldnt confirm this.
It would be nice to know as I have home video stuff that I was hoping to hand down to the kids in a lot more years than 5!!!

Ask yourself the question, have CDs deteriorated over time?
DVDs should last a very long time (provided they are pressed properly).
A very very small number of releases have been pressed badly, and start to deteriorate.
Some examples of this are the limited edition region 1 version of Heathers by Anchor Bay.
Things like this cause some people to become confused and say things like DVDs will waste away after 5 years. Which is not true.

Ok, well, Cheap CDS will start to flake down in a matter of weeks....
However, most will last a long time, get the matte white topped discs.
Silver Discs or Gold Discs I think will last 100 years, however remember to treat each disc properly!
