Question:

i'm under the impression that panasonic is the way to go
(its done me well in the past... my 12 year old panny VCR has just passed away)
but what is the best of the best as far as video recorders go?
lets figure out the top 5
price is not (yet) an issue...

Best are probably the JVC/Mitsubishi/Panasonic S-VHS decks. NOt sure which you can get in the UK though. I actually just settled for a mid-range Sony here and got a ReplayTV (TiVo) for day to day recording! I'd say get a TiVo and a cheap(er) VCR especially if you have Sky/cable

I also recently replaced a 12 year old Panny - which hadn't passed away but the picture from its tuner was no longer very good. Still plays fine though.
I didn't want S-VHS but did like the idea of another Panny so I bought the one with the tape library system (never had one of these before - wouldn't want to be without it now) which cost me £160 in Comet (couldn't be bothered to wait for one from Empire just to save about £9).
The number is NVF J780BS and I'm very pleased with it.

what sort of outputs has it got at the back? my old one had a scart and 2 sets of phono's (in and out)... i'd like a new one with at least the same and pref S-Video too... plus i really think SVHS is the way to go...
thanks

I bought a Panasonic SVHS NVHS830BS a few weeks ago and very pleased with it, I bought it instore from Comet for £150, Which is not a bad price compared to various online stores. So if you are after a Panny NVHS830BS check comet instore price, Comet online price £179.
I was tempted to go for a NVF J780BS for the Tape Library feature but prefered Higher quality recordings than the Tape Library feature, Also I found the NVHS830BS has RGB pass thru which is handy if you only have single SCART socket that is RGB enabled so you can plug in your Game Console, DVD Player etc, Not sure if the NVF J780BS has this, It probably has., Don't get me wrong the NVFJ780BS is a fine VCR. For archiving from my TiVo it works great as well.
This is my TV setup:-

I bought a Panasonic SVHS NVHS830BS
I have one of these & it's very good indeed, got it from the dreaded Empire Direct last September for £148. Looks nice aswell with it's half mirror finish (which pulls down to reveal the A/V sockets & buttons etc).

Always go for panasonic when it comes to VCRs. Anyone in the video industry will tell you the same.

Yes look at my picture above :) Okay I did not label the L+R audio out's and in's but I use the SVideo out and L+R audio out from the Video to input into the DVD Recorder.

does it have the IN audio and S-video on the back too?
if so... then its a def winner!

Answers:

No but you could use one of those SVideo and L+R audio SCART adaptors plugged into either AV1 or AV2, That is what I used to output SVideo+Audio out my DVD Recorder back into the AV1 of the Video.

Philips - Good picture, sound and price, and it's a lot easier to use than other makes I've come across.
The worst being the Sony SE800. Yes the picture and sound are good, but you can't input a new recording into the timer once a recording has started. What's the point in that?

Another vote for Panasonic - stunning performance for a VCR generally. I've had mine for 4 years and it hasn't missed a beat.
