DTS over 5.1 question
Question:

I've got a sony dvd with a built in decoder that also plays DTS. This is plugged into a basic little powered speaker set (built-in amp/bass and five speakers) .
Is it worth me getting a sperate amp for DTS? Or would the sound difference be so minimal it'd be a waste of time and money?
This might be a dumb question, but never having heard DTS, I have no idea how much better it is.
Cheers
Jerryg

Answers:

Is it better? not always. Its a matter of opinion really. DTS Full Bit Rate encodes are better than DD, but there are very few full bit rate encodes out there.
The general concensus (sp?) is that DTS is just encoded louder and maybe more bass than DD.
However upgrading the amp would probably also give you better DD. The main thing is how satisfied are you with the DD.
Another advantage of DTS is that there is a 6.1 Discrete format (DTS-ES) where DD only have 6.1 Matrix (DD-EX) and the DTS-ES can sound very good, but the amps are more expensive and you need an extra speaker.

Thanks for that Kryten
I might not bother just yet. My system is loud enough for me at the moment and has enough bass. I also haven't got much room left in my lounge for another speaker, albeit a small one.

I concur
Seeing as though you already have some sort of surround setup it's really only worth the upgrade if you really must have the best possible sound experience. I use DTS when i can and prefer it over anything else i've heard anyday, but it's not exactly a giant leap over DD 5.1 and so as you said, is all down to your own opinion and how deep your pockets go :D
You'd do well to wait and see how you feel when some of the speaker kits come even further down in price.
