HELP with sony 735
Question:

I have had a Sony 735 for about 2 years, but now refuses to play DVD. I get the error "NO_DISK". I have tried re calibrating the lazar and cleaning it but still get this error. I have also read on the net about a lot of people getting this and a possible solder fix, but have not tried this yet. The company have also washed there hands of it telling me it is out of warranty and to take it to a repair shop.
Has any one had this problem and fixed it or is it time for a new player (£300 down the plug)http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/t/keano.gif

Sorry quite a common problem with the x2x and x3x models, sounds like your lasers failed and the drive needs replacing, about £70ish plus vat and labour from a local sony service centre.
Certainly not aware of any "solder link" fix that would solve the fact that the drive is no longer able to read discs!
Unfortinatley if the unit is not under warranty, neither the firm that supplied the goods nor sony themselves would repair it FOC. If you look in your yellow pages or thompson local, you should find a local sony service center to you that should be able to quote you for a repair. As to if you decide its worth it or not, considering the advances made in performance and price in the past couple of years is down to you:(
Hope that helps?

My 536 failed after 18 months of pretty intensive use. These players get warm under the disk tray and I think this may contribute to the frailty of the laser assembly (mine was diagnosed as a failed laser pickup). Total cost was £20 for the check, and £110 to repair with the £20 deducted. Having bought mine soon after the models release not many had failed and I thought I was just unlucky. Time has proven that it was a design/hardware weakness. Hopefully Sony's notoriously short production runs mean the weakness was limited to these models, but I have to say I use a Panasonic as my main player with the 536 collecting dust in my spare room due to its innability to play cd-r's and dvd-r's.

Thanks for the replies, will put it down to experience and probably get a new player.
