Question:
I have a Acoustic Solutions 551 DVD Player with built in AC3 Dolby Digital and DTS. I wanted to add some speakers as my television's sound is terrible. Can I just add a speaker set without needing an amp? Or can I just add two normal speakers to get stereo? I am skint and have little money. I already own two speakers so would just need to buy some speaker wire if this is the case.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about your player, but your typical dd/dts decoder gives a 6 channel line out. This is normally 6 phonos, one for centre, sub, fr,fl,rr,rl.
These are very likely line level outs, so unless you've got powered speakers (computer ones, etc) they're gonna need some sort of amplification.
You can take the standard two channel line out (possibly a software redirection of the fl, fr outs) and amp them in a standard hifi.
OR, you can pick up an ageing pro logic only amp with a 6channel input (shed loads of phonos round the back) and use this to amp your signal to as many speakers as you can afford.
Either would be satisfied for around £50-£100 second hand. Get ye to a Richers. ;)
(you'll still need the speaker wire though.)

Yes - you can plug straight into a 6 channel amp without the need for DD decoding. Try the Videologic Digitheatre LC.
Thanks. i have some computer speakers so I will try those. Also thanks for the suggestion of Richer Sounds. I had completley forgotten that they do second hand. I was thinking more of cash convertors, but I will give Richers a look when i find the time.
Keep an eye out on the bargain forum for cheap surround sound speaker sets. I managed to get a little set of Reoc speakers from Safeways that way for £60 about 5-6 months ago. All I had to do was plug it in the back and I was away. It may not be flash, but it's more than loud enough to more me and sounds good to my uneducated ears. It even had a remote control.
Thanks in advance.
